Power outages affect thousands of NV Energy customers overnight

Wake up this morning with your clocks out of sync? No, it wasn’t a dream through the cosmic space-time continuum warp and it wasn’t that you missed Daylight Saving Time — you didn’t. It is still a month out yet. It was a power outage.

Senator Square: Academic achievement, scouting leadership put Carson senior in spotlight

This week’s Carson High senior spotlight is on Tyler Torres. Tyler has a GPA of 4.62 and has increasingly challenged himself with honors and/or AP classes every year, earning academic letters the past two years. He is currently taking four AP classes in his senior year. Talented and well-rounded, Tyler has been in Chamber Choir since freshman year. He has also been a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years and Link Crew for two years. To further develop his leadership ability, Tyler has been involved in Boy Scouts since middle school.

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is making materials available to participants in the statewide Recycled Art Contest. Nevada Governor Sandoval announces annual poster and essay contest

As part of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration Gov. Brian Sandoval has announced the fourth annual statewide poster and essay contest for Nevada school children. This year’s theme will celebrate Nevada’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood with the state motto “All for Our Country.”

The contest, which is open to all Nevada school children, grades K through 12, in district, charter, private or home schools, includes four categories depending on grade level.

Nevada county association celebrates Sesquicentennial tonight with western singers, UNR cadet band

Tonight, Sept. 19, the Nevada Association of Counties will host a celebration of Nevada’s 150th birthday with a performance by local western musicians Richard Elloyen and Steve Wade.

The event will also feature the UNR Cadet Band and a chance to see inside one of Carson City’s historic pre-statehood homes. The event begins at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the historic Ormsby Rosser house at 3rd and Minnesota Streets in Carson City.

Sparks woman dies in pedestrian accident Thursday night near McCarran and Prater Way

A 62-year-old Sparks woman was killed attempting to cross the intersection of McCarran and Prater Way in Sparks on Thursday night, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Maria Ramon Rivera-Depineda died when she was struck by a black Ford Mustang driven by a 51-year-old Sparks man. The woman died at the accident scene, reported at 9:55 p.m., said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

Friday King Fire update: Highway 50 reopens, air quality remains unhealthy

UPDATE: Air quality monitors in Carson City and Gardnerville are reporting levels of particulate matter in the unhealthy range due to smoke from the King fire in California, according to Nevada environmental health officials.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should consider moving activities indoors and avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. Everyone else should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.

Nordyke Ranch House in Lyon County listed in State Register of Historic Places

Statewide recycled art contest underway

The Nevada Recycles program has partnered with Las Vegas Sands Corp. to support a statewide recycled art contest to increase Nevadans’ awareness and interest in recycling.

Entrants must be Nevada residents and projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of entry form and photos of artwork are due by Oct. 31, 2014.

In addition to a $200 prize to the first place class project, Las Vegas Sands Corp. will provide first, second and third ($250, $100, and $50 respectively) prizes in four categories: Kindergarten-grade 5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12 and Adult.

Statewide Nevada 150 events held throughout second half of September

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of September. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Sept. 15 through 30.

Southwest Gas proposes 31 cent winter rate hike adjustment for Northern Nevada customers

Southwest Gas is seeking a 2015 rate adjustment hike of around 31 cents a month in winter and 8 cents during summer for Northern Nevada customers, according to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada.

There will be a consumer session on Thursday, Sept. 18 to hear comments regarding the annual rate adjustment application. Southwest Gas also proposes to increase the average Southern Nevada residential customer monthly bill an estimated 9 cents during the summer and 27 cents in winter. If approved by the commission, the company proposes the rate changes take effect Jan. 1, 2015.

Local Canine Recovery Center: “Fall for CRCS”- A Big Reveal That Will Impact Northern Nevada

NDOT hosts public meeting to discuss final segment of Carson City Freeway project

Those looking to know more about the future of the Carson City Freeway and its next phase of construction and final segment scheduled to open in 2017 are invited to a public meeting Wednesday, Sept. 17, hosted by the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The meeting will provide updates and a proposed schedule for upcoming phase 2B-3 of freeway construction, which will pave and open the freeway to traffic between Fairview Drive and the Spooner/U.S. 50 junction in south Carson City.

Senator Square: Car wash and rummage sale fundraisers this week plus senior in the spotlight

This Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Carson High School Health Occupations Students of America members will host car wash and rummage sale in the U at the front of the school. Pre-sale car wash tickets are $3 and can be purchased from any HOSA student. The cost will go up to $5 the day of the car wash. All proceeds go to help send HOSA students to State and National conferences to compete and represent Carson City.
