Sierra Lutheran High School and Bethlehem Lutheran School will be two of the schools showcased at the National School Choice Fair on Saturday, February 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno.

Americans love choice. We love the freedom to choose what we want and when we want it. Ford or Chevy, Coke or Pepsi, Apple or Samsung, we thrive on the multitude of options at our fingertips that we feel best meets our needs. The essence of it all is the opportunity we have to choose the type of life we want and how we get there. This is, of course, unless you’re talking about education in the State of Nevada.

Opportunity sparks positive gains for Nevada scholarship students

A report released last Friday by the Nevada Department of Education showed that nearly 70 percent of students receiving the Nevada Opportunity Scholarship experienced a positive score change according the report, based on six standardized measurements utilized.

Let me begin by wishing each of you a Happy New Year, and by congratulating you on the successful campaigns you ran.

I know you don’t have a lot of time to settle in before the legislative session begins this month, but I want to share the cry of this mother’s heart as you consider education during the session, specifically keeping the Nevada Opportunity Scholarship program (AB165) as it currently exists..

Dear Governor Sisolak & Members of the Nevada State Legislature:
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. English is my second language, so I hope I can share my thoughts okay with you.

I am a mother of five who immigrated to this country 33 years ago because of the opportunity of a better life. The American Dream. My life here with my family has been a dream, and I want my kids to know all the opportunities America offers. The most important opportunity I want them to have is the Nevada Opportunity Scholarship, and the chance for the best education possible.

Don't knock opportunity, answer it
