CARSON CITY — Employment in Nevada increased over the month by 9,200 jobs as the State continues to recover. Jobs remain below typical levels; Nevada has 109,500 fewer jobs than in November 2019, for an annual job growth rate of -7.7 percent according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s November 2020 economic report.

Jobs still remain below typical levels, down by 117,200 compared to October 2019, for an annual rate of -8.2 percent according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s October 2020 economic report.

The Carson City area has added back enough jobs to be within 700 jobs of its pre-COVID employment levels, according to the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation in a September jobs report released Tuesday.

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) July 2020 economic report, employment in Nevada realized an increase of 14,800 jobs over the month and saw a decrease of -138,700 jobs since July 2019, or -9.8%.

The total employment level in the State is 1,281,100. The state’s unemployment rate is 14% this month, down 1.2 percentage point from June but up 10.1 percentage point when compared to July 2019.

RENO - Based on processed applications as of May 13, 2020, Nevada State Bank has announced approval for 4,255 U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans totaling $592,005,500.

More than 68% of the loans were made to businesses with fewer than 10 employees and approximately 82% of the loans approved were for amounts less than $150,000 (57% for amounts less than $50,000). The funding will help preserve payrolls for 65,607 Nevada jobs, based on applicant data.

Attorneys for the teachers association and state business interests faced off before the Nevada Supreme Court today over whether a proposed margins tax initiative petition has met legal requirements and so should be submitted to the 2013 Legislature.

CARSON CITY – Carson City District Judge James Wilson today ruled a teacher-backed proposal to impose a margin tax in Nevada cannot go forward because it violates a “single-subject” rule for such measures.

CARSON CITY – Carson City District Judge James Wilson heard arguments today but delayed ruling on whether an initiative petition filed by the state teachers association to raise an estimated $800 million a year for education via a new margin tax is too flawed to go forward.

Wilson said after a brief hearing that he will issue a decision “as soon as possible.”

CARSON CITY – The Committee to Protect Nevada Jobs filed a lawsuit today against the “Education Initiative” (margin tax Initiative) charging that that the petition’s description of effect is deceptive and incomplete and that it violates the single-subject rule.

The complaint was filed in Carson City District Court.
