Two-thirds of children eligible for Pandemic EBT benefits were not receiving SNAP benefits

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services estimates that nearly 223,000 Nevada children who were not already receiving SNAP benefits will be eligible for Nevada’s Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program.

The Legislature’s Interim Finance Committee unanimously approved more than $800,000 of emergency funding on Tuesday for a federal program that could provide nearly $300 in meal assistance to each Nevada child who missed out on their free and reduced priced lunches as a result of school closures.

The Carson City Airport will once again be hosting its Open House and Fly-In this Saturday, June 29 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., with all proceeds going to benefit the Eagle Valley Children’s Home.

This year, the annual festivity is adding a new kind of wing to the mix: chicken wings, with a Chicken Wing Cook-Off Challenge.

Member program and presentation in the Carriage House - Bonnie Nishikawa and Girl Scout troop 1951 will be offering a program and new exhibit on the Nevada Children’s Home.

This local Girl Scout troop is working on their Silver Award, the second highest award a Girl Scout can earn, and have created a special display and exhibit for CCHS honoring the memory of the Children’s Home in Carson City. Come see and hear what they have done! We will also hold a short business meeting for members. Refreshments will be served.

December 21 is the Silver Stage Food Pantry’s fifth annual “Shopping with the Elves” event. From 1-5 p.m., parents who are guests of the Food Pantry can shop for gifts for their children.

The event includes a chance for children to visit with Santa and have holiday refreshments while their parents shop. The Pantry is in need of gifts for ages infant to 18 years.

Home-bound Seniors: The Pantry also welcomes donations of gifts for seniors. They deliver baskets and gifts to 40 home-bound elders, and sing carols to them as well.

First Independent Bank customers, employees, and the general public, collected nearly 200 new coats for Northern Nevada children to keep them warm this winter.

The coats were collected during a month-long coat drive involving all seven First Independent Bank locations, including one in Carson City. The 192 coats collected were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.

Fighters Against Child Abuse is holding its Third Annual Christmas Coat, Toy and Donation Drive to benefit Carson, Douglas, and Lyon County Children. All donations stay in The Greater Carson Area, and 100% of all donations will be used to benefit an abused, neglected, or at-risk child.

FACA is seeking new clothing, socks, underwear, new coats, new toys, and Gift Cards to provide tangible goods to abused children, CASA, Austin's House Child Abuse Emergency Shelter, and Ventana Sierra, an organization that provides housing for aged-out Foster kids.

Immunize Nevada and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health met Tuesday at Carson Tahoe Women’s Health Institute for an event to educate Nevadans about Text4baby and to encourage expecting and first time mothers to do something for themselves this Mother’s Day and enroll in Text4baby.

The speakers, including Senator Ben Kieckhefer, from Washoe District 16; Vickie Ives, a representative from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health; and Julia Peek, a mother of two and Text4baby user, spoke about the benefits of the program in helping build strong Nevada families.

Art of the Brick exhibit at Northern Nevada Children's Museum

The Art of Brick exhibition is now on display at the Northern Nevada Children's Museum. The artwork by Nathan Sawaya is built entirely out of LEGOs, and have been attracting record crowds since they started a nationwide tour in 2007. Sawaya is known as the Picasso of LEGO bricks, and his sculptures can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even Don Trump has commissioned one of the pieces.
