(press release) Las Vegas, NV – Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto today announced that she filed an Assurance of Discontinuance with Morgan Stanley Mortgage Capital Holdings (“Morgan Stanley”) to resolve an investigation into the firm’s role in purchasing and securitizing roughly 3,000 subprime mortgages in Nevada.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto this week requested permission to amend a previous complaint against Bank of America and its subsidiaries to add more claims relating to mortgage origination and servicing.

CARSON CITY – Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said today it will probably be another month before she can publicly report the results of her staff’s legal conclusions regarding requests for refunds from the state by Clark and Washoe counties totaling $123 million.
Masto said her office is still “moving through the process” to determine if any refunds are owed the two local governments. Once that analysis is completed, Masto said her legal findings will be shared privately with Gov. Brian Sandoval.

A number of leaders from around Northern Nevada, including officials from Lyon County and Carson City, attended the summit earlier this month that highlighted the impact of marijuana use.

The summit held in Las Vegas on Jan. 13-14, featured a dynamic group of local and national experts that presented the latest research and data on marijuana and its impact on community, the environment, enforcement, business and economy, treatment, and legislation.

CARSON CITY – In the wake of a legislative audit critical of state agency contracting practices with current and former employees, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has posted its information online.
Bob Conrad, public information officer for the department, said the contract information was placed on the agency’s website on Dec. 29.

A debate today among the three candidates for Nevada attorney general focused on a disputed ad discussing a decades old criminal conviction of the Republican seeking the post and allegations of political favoritism by the incumbent, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto.

With Nevada having the worst murder rate in the nation when it comes to domestic violence against women by men, the state's attorney general said the issue is a top priority for her office.

Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto will hold the first statewide Domestic Violence Fatality Review Summit in Las Vegas on Friday, bringing together over 120 people from around the state to address the issue of domestic violence deaths in Nevada.
The summit will take place at the Suncoast Hotel Casino, 9090 Alta Drive, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto joined an Amici Curiae brief issued by the Attorney General of Kansas and joined by 47 states and the District of Columbia to protect the privacy and emotional health of grieving families of returning war dead. The issue concerns the right of a group to picket and protest at military funerals. The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit had ruled against the privacy of the family and in favor of the protest group. 

Las Vegas attorney Mark Hutchison says he will soon be going to Florida for oral arguments in the federal motion to dismiss the health care lawsuit being brought by 20 states including Nevada.
Reagan-appointed U.S. District Court Judge Roger Vinson will hear arguments challenging the states’ right to bring the suit on September 14, 2010 in the Northern District of Florida.

The federal appeals court in San Francisco has ruled that Nevada can limit the amount of advertising brothels can display in cities and counties where brothels are banned.

Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki says coming off a hard battle with the Nevada Attorney General over charges that were dropped, has made him ready to take on incumbent U.S. Senator Harry Reid.
