What Works: Does comparison hold you back or move you forward?

Like it or not, we live in a society built on one-upmanship. Progress is formed by improving processes, inventing something new, and ultimately doing something just a little, or a lot, better than the next person. Competition is important for growth. However, how do you know when competition is becoming counter-productive? How can you groom your mindset to view competition in a healthy way, versus turning it into the song “anything you can do, I can do better?”

How To Win Every Argument, Every Time

Several days ago, my dad and I had a conversation. Our conversation started like most other people start theirs. He expressed his thoughts and concerns and I parried back with mine. At the end of the day we were both frustrated with the whole conversation. It was a stalemate. He didn’t understand me and I didn’t understand him. Which seems very familiar with some of the conversations I’ve had with my wife.

How can two people in the same room, speaking the same language, not understand each other? How many conversations like that, have you had?

What Works: Finding your happy

Sunday I spent the day at the Reno Earth Day Festival with some friends. It was really nice to sit down on the grass, bask in the sun, and slow down for a while.

I had brought a few toys with me, four bubble guns and a hula hoop. While we were playing with the bubbles, I took a moment to observe the crowd around me — everyone “finding their happy” in their own way.

What Works: Grow your business without as much green

The other day, I had a conversation with a client who had a tiny marketing budget. Although their product was great, they had a hard time getting the word out because they couldn't afford to advertise like they wanted. Advertising is important, but it’s not end end-all, be-all of business. There are three things you need to build a customer base, or what I’d like to call your future fan base.

1) A product or service worth talking about
2) An opportunity to expose people to that winning product or service
