Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education program is presenting its Career Expo Thursday, Feb. 18 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the high school in Senator Square. The Expo is open to the general public as well as all Carson High School students.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education agriculture program lead teacher, Charlie Mann, donned his dress, braided his beard and welcomed his Agriculture 1 students to the Hunger Games.

The Carson City students have been studying world hunger, commodities, production and trade throughout the semester, and the Hunger Games simulation gave them an opportunity to examine trade and barter with their peers while relating to popular culture.

The latest round of funding through the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act includes more than $3 million for projects to help reduce wildfire risk in Lake Tahoe communities.

Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno have found that an instrument the scientific community commonly uses to measure mercury in the air yields inaccurate results.

Principal researcher Mae Gustin in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences has been leading the effort to determine the accuracy of a widely used mercury measuring instrument. This past summer was Lake Tahoe’s busiest tourist season in recent memory. With the economy rebounding and major population growth projected for nearby metropolitan areas, this summer is also a harbinger of change. We must be prepared to meet the challenges of increased visitation in the future.

We put science on a pedestal and submit to it as the final authority on all of our problems and important questions. We rely on science to give us the answers.

We even permit science to be the driving force behind public policy, in spite of the fact that science is a search for questions that remain unanswered.

A project to improve teff grass, a staple grain that originated in Ethiopia, is underway at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture is launching the Comstock History Lecture Series, which includes seven themed lectures that focus on Comstock History.
