Wintery Sundays are almost asking for hot chocolate and ice skating. Head down to Carson Lanes for their Bowling ‘Golf’ Tournament and see how well you can maneuver 18 lanes with varying oil patterns. Classic movie lovers are in for a treat as Galaxy Theater offers two viewings of the 1952 favorite, ‘Singing in the Rain.’ Grab some friends or your special someone for ‘Bostyx’ featuring David Victor formerly of Boston. You’ll find this great concert in the Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center.

The snow has finally stopped falling and now it’s time to go play in it. What’s on your weekend fun list: snowmen and skiing or a toasty fire with a good book? The estate of Bob McFadden, featuring art and collectibles curated over McFadden’s lifetime, is being offered for sale by the McFadden family at an art and collectibles sale Saturday, Jan. 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale is open to both the public and professional art dealers, and will be held at the McFadden home, the historic Krebs Peterson mansion, at 500 Mountain Street in Carson City.

How adventurous are you? Ascent Runs continues their Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series with a five or ten kilometer run starting at Centennial Park. If you’d like a less strenuous outdoor activity, then the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk is a perfect choice. The wine walk is a rain, snow, or shine event, so bring an umbrella. I know it's hard to think about summer whilst scraping ice off your windshield, but the Community Discount Registration Event for Epic Rides at the Firkin and Fox will have you blissfully dreaming of bike rides in June. It's family fun at the Carson Library's Movie Night: bring the kids down for Finding Dory. Jazz it up with the Shipleys at Living the Good Life. Digital artists, or aspiring ones, will find camaraderie at Wired Wednesday. This month's meeting at Paradise Salon Spa Wellness will cover the upcoming City Wide Film-making Competition.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Snowy days make the perfect backdrop for a day curled up with a book. If you’re participating in the Library Winter Read-athon, tear yourself away from your cozy spot and go log in your hours this afternoon.

Get over the mid-week hump with a visit to one of Carson City’s art exhibits. There’s nothing like a little beauty to make your day. Capital City Arts Initiative has a display at the court house, inside the Sierra Room at the Community Center, and inside the BRIC building by City Hall. Check out the exhibit at the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Artist Association’s featured artist inside the Carson Visitor Center. Carson City is awash with art, so go see what is making our valley beautiful.

WEDNESDAY:

When it comes to history, the west side of Carson City gets most the attention. Learn what makes the east side unique on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk at 9 a.m. Galaxy Theater offers a special movie rate on Tuesdays if you’ve got a rewards card: grab the kids and take in a winter break movie. The Old Corner Bar in Minden welcomes the return of the Flash Jam, so grab your instrument and get your groove on.

Merry Christmas, Happy Chaunukah, and a very blessed holidays to you, Carson City. I’m hoping your out of town friends and family made it safely, winter storms are known to wreak havoc on travel. For the first movie of 2017, the Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents "Beat the Devil" on Jan. 3. Beat the Devil is a 1953 British film directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida, and featuring Robert Morley, Peter Lorre and Bernard Lee.

The winter solstice is today: the shortest day and longest night of the year. I’m always happy to hear that because it means longer days are on their way. The holiday frenzy continues, so don’t miss out on those pictures with Santa. Red’s Old 395 will send you off with a complementary 4”x6” photo, and Santa’s Village at the Carson Mall is open all day. Politics is held in an arena, where punches are thrown. I have been in the boxing ring earlier in my life; knocked out cold, my opponent had the best left hook. My nose has been re-arranged a few times. I can take a punch.

The Carson City Library has something in common with the epic spaghetti western ‘The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly’: they are both 50 years old. Celebrate the classic film and our classy library with an afternoon showing of the movie. Join Cherie Shipley at the Brewery Arts Center; the annual ‘Joyful Noise’ Community Holiday Show is full of cheer for all ages. Our high school and middle school student orchestras invite you to their free winter concert at the Community Center this evening. Living the Good Life welcomes singer/songwriter Liam Kyle Cahill back to their stage tonight.

Join us at the Carson City Library for an early movie matinee Thursday, Dec. 15. We're celebrating our 50th anniversary, and so is this classic movie, "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" starring Clint Eastwood.

What do you need to get in the holiday spirit? Carson City probably has it covered. Watch ‘A Christmas Wish’ with Jimmy Durante at the monthly meeting of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. Off Stephanie Lane, on Chaparral Court, is a spectacular display known as Nevada Christmas.

The Carson City Raiders Booster Club is partnering again with The Carson City Senior Center by adopting 20 home-bound seniors and making their Christmas wishes come true.
The local community helps us with our cause by donating items for our annual (17 years) Christmas Commitment.
This year our event will be held on Sunday November 27 from 12:30pm - 4:30pm, at the Eleventh Frame Lounge @ Carson Lanes, 4600 Snyder Ave in Carson City.

Yesterday, I checked into an AirBnb in downtown El Paso. My lovely friends in San Diego had put me up the night before. We watched a movie called Sicario, a flick about Mexican drug cartels. Needless to say, the movie is partially set in Juarez, the border town right next to El Paso. It was the perfect set up to a nice waterfall of assumption.

Local Freshies, in association with 4Frnt Skis, will host a two-stop movie premiere of “Here and Now,” along with “Tahoe: The Daily Routine,” in partnership with Basecamp Hotel & Diamond Peak.

Whew. One more Halloween/Nevada Day weekend in the bag: now let’s start November off with a bang. Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos at Red’s Old 395 with the Modelo girls or check out the festivities at Western Nevada College that the Latino Outreach and Association of Latin American Students have planned. Travel back in time with the Carson Chamber Singers in Concert featuring Requiem for the Living and music of the Renaissance at the Shepherd of the Sierra Church. The popcorn is always free at the monthly Carson City Classic Cinema Club’s movie viewing.

Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Start your day at the Museum, hang around for the downtown ribbon cutting and festivities, then join in the costumed fun as Blinky Man hits the streets. Do the time warp at the Brewery Arts Center: the Rocky Horror Picture Show Party starts at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be one amazing weekend, so let’s get this party started.

Let’s do the time warp again! This Friday night, Oct. 28 the BAC and PPI will celebrate the season with a screening of the original cult classic musical “Rocky Horror Picture Show” at the BAC Performance Hall. The event begins at 8:30 p.m. with costume contests and activities and the movie will begin at 10 p.m.

Breathe in some crisp autumn air and take in the beauty of the changing leaves as you accompany Muscle Powered on an early morning bike ride. Show off your favorite fur baby at Genoa Coffee and Candy’s Howl-O-Ween celebration. Stop by the Nevada State Railroad Museum for the last day of the Harvest Train Festival and Pumpkin Patch. Hold onto your broomstick, this weekend is bound to sweep you up in Halloween fun. First you’ll need a pumpkin. Take the costumed kids to a Trunk or Treat at Advantage Auto Works off Old Hot Springs Road courtesy of the members of Carson Cruise Meet and Greet. Team up with Mark Twain for a ghostly tour of our haunted downtown or you can choose a shorter tour that’s perfect for families. Keep reading, this is just the tip of the candy corn.

The 29th annual Nevada Writers Hall of Fame event honors Nevada’s finest authors and recognizes emerging writers for their work. This year, the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame will welcome Gailmarie Pahmeier, Reno’s first poet laureate, and Willy Vlautin, song writer and author of four highly-recognized novels. Tod Goldberg, author of the comedic crime novel “Gangsterland,” is the 2016 Silver Pen Recipient.
