Miss Lake Tahoe

A year can pass very quickly. Just ask Samantha Byassee and Karrina Ferris, who were crowned Miss Carson City and Miss Carson City Outstanding Teen, respectively, in 2016.

One year later, the two reigning local titleholders in the Miss America organization turned their crowns over to the 2017 winners Saturday night on stage in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

Since taking over Partnership Carson City’s youth group One Up in September, Brooklyn Maw has seen it grow from seven members to 55.

If you’re looking for something indoors, the Spring has Sprung Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center is overflowing with color. Come to the Red Hut Cafe in Carson City from 3 to 7pm to meet Miss Lake Tahoe, Briana Neben and help her to raise funds for our local Children's Miracle Network hospital as she prepares to compete for Miss Nevada 2016. All proceeds will go to Renown Children's Hospital and will help to create miracles for the children and their families. This event is held on Briana's 23rd birthday, so come join the celebration!

A cold front will continue to push through the region late Saturday night into Monday but it looks like it will miss Lake Tahoe and Carson City with only a slight chance of rain and snow showers with the brunt of the system heading further into central and southern Nevada and the California Eastern Sierra to the south, according to the National Weather Service.

The long-awaited Sportsman’s Warehouse is going to hold a really big ribbon cutting this Saturday morning to “officially” open their new store located in the Carson Mall.

Though they have had a “soft” opening this past week, the official opening is on April 5. Executives from Sportsman’s corporate and the Carson City Board of Supervisors will be attending the event coordinated by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce beginning at 8:30 a.m. Also in attendance will be the following beauty queens:

A Carson High senior will pull out all the musical stops with the help of some of her friends to raise awareness of a rare, genetic disease that has stricken a family member.

On Saturday April 13 at Comma Coffee, Carson City will be "Singing for Cystinosis." This is a musical showcase promoted by Carson High senior Emily Morris and a fundraiser to raise awareness of Cystinosis, an "orphan" disease with about 500 people - mostly children - stricken with it in the United States and more than 2,000 worldwide. It is a rare disease that receives little or no funding to find a cure.

Carson City's annual Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights has become so well received over the years that the 2012 festival will now run for two days. The enhanced event is tonight, Friday, Dec. 7, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ice skating continues until 10 p.m.

Tonight's night's festivities begin on the capitol grounds with the state tree, a bristlecone pine, and downtown Carson City being lit along with a procession including Santa, Mrs. Claus and the 300 voices of the Carson City 5th Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble.
