Column: My Favorite Nevada Moments
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 10/31/2020 - 7:56amThe Nevada Day Committee got it wrong this year. By selecting "My Favorite Nevada Moment" as the theme for 2020, the committee has left people like me out.
I can't whittle my experiences in Nevada down to just one favorite.
Carson City's voter statistics show no significant changes despite majority mail-in voting system
Submitted by Kelsey Penrose on Wed, 06/10/2020 - 9:52amVoter turnout for Carson City has remained virtually unchanged despite the mail-in voting for the June primary, according to initial results from the primary. For those residents concerned over voter fraud due to the new system, this should come as a relief.

Mourning the Loss of Dennis Hof (Opinion)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 10/23/2018 - 10:16amWhen news of the sudden death of Assembly candidate and brothel owner Dennis Hof reached us last Tuesday, we were quite stunned by it. We had gotten to know Dennis, and James had seen him several times in the weeks preceding his sudden departure.
One of his great gifts was the ability to make you feel you were the most important person in the room. Two occasions involving James come to mind, but Ron felt the same way.
Silver State musings: Nevada Day, Halloween, Dennis Hof and elections
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sat, 10/20/2018 - 7:42pmEvery year folks ask what day Halloween trick-or-treating occurs in Carson City.
In any other state and in any other Nevada community, there is no question. Trick-or-treating happens each year on Halloween night, Oct. 31.

Nevada Capital News: An interview with Jared Lord Libertarian candidate for Governor
Submitted by editor on Sat, 09/29/2018 - 3:47pmJared Lord says he’s running for governor because he believes he can help bridge the partisan divide.
“I’m seeing a lot of just opportunity for positive change to happen,” Lord said. “There’s so much just animosity and partisanship and just anger that, it just frustrates me to see and I really want to be part of fixing that.”
Communism and Millennials, Progressives and Liberals
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/13/2017 - 10:34amIn the 100th anniversary of communism last month, three points stood out.
First, polls say half of America’s millennials would rather live under socialism or communism than capitalism.
Second, the reality of communism was, horrifically, exactly the opposite of the naïve view held by today’s young and by many people around the world in the last century.
Third, the essential faults and failures of communism also characterize all government to some degree, especially democratic socialism, progressivism and statist liberalism.
John McCain: In a New Fight for His Life
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 08/02/2017 - 7:48amArizona’s United States Senator John McCain has been a difficult Republican for libertarian limited-government conservatives like us to embrace. Often, we stand opposite him on important issues of the day. He is too lacking in overarching principle for our taste. James has called on him to retire and actually sided with his Republican primary opponents in 2010 and 2016.
Yet, today we are sad.

Measuring Liberty and Libertarians
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 10/25/2016 - 8:06amThe corrupt Clinton criminals are repeating this strategy of divide and conquer again in this election and every voter should understand that any Republican vote for third parties helps insure victory for the lollipop guild Hillary who is as intelligent, and honest, as she is tall. The Clinton's crime family rose to power using the divide and conquer assistance of Ross Perot. The Clinton's can win again with only a minority of votes because many voters split the electorate three ways.
Column: Question 2 not all it’s cooked up to be
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Mon, 10/24/2016 - 9:07amTo legalize or not to legalize, that is the question we must answer on Nov. 8.
Or, is it?
I’ve taken my time this year to deliberate over the matter of recreational marijuana legalization — in spite of my general instinctive opposition to mind-altering substances — consulting with area experts on drugs and drug policy.
Following hours of interviews, reading and research, my conclusion is that there is something more sinister at stake here over Question 2 than simply the legalization of an illicit drug.

Voters Didn’t Get Fooled Again – and They Won’t Next Time, Either
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 06/15/2016 - 1:02pmNevada Republican voters spoke loudly last night. Again.
They spoke loudly in November 2014, voting down a proposed gross receipts tax (GRT) 4-to-1 and sweeping Republicans into control of Nevada’s executive and legislative branches for the first time in generations.
That was a mandate to hold the line on taxes, reform collective bargaining, stop the bleeding in the Public Employees Retirement System, improve schools through choice and other reforms, and especially to oppose the kind of tax 79 percent of voters rejected.
Others saw things differently.

Military Force Is Sometimes Necessary to Protect Freedom

As relationships progress, they should respond to others in ways reflecting the accumulated mix of good and bad a person has demonstrated.
Mental health is Nevada's albatross
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 09/05/2015 - 5:46pmDuring this year’s legislative session, my wife and I approached our state legislators about resources for Nevada’s most underserved population: The mentally ill.
There is a health crisis in our state, one which has grown into an epidemic across the nation, but one that is especially endemic right here in the Silver State.
Having lived more than twelve years in a state that seems to cater to many human vices, this comes as no surprise to me.

What's A "Republican"?
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 06/08/2015 - 5:05pmThe shameless behavior of the "Republicans" in the recently concluded 78th session of the Nevada Legislature -- their vote for the biggest tax and budget hike in the State's history being first and foremost among their record of mis- and nonfeasance -- and the angry reaction to it by the State Party and the loyal Republican rank-and-file, raise an important question.
What is a Republican? What does it mean to be a Republican? If the RINOs and conservatives are both "Republicans," then the term badly needs to be defined.

Deep Thoughts, Cheap Thoughts and Bonbons
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 01/01/2014 - 2:09pmThe New Year has begun, and quite surprisingly the past year has gone by extremely fast. Unsurprisingly, rarely did anything surprise me during my first year as a Supervisor. Granted there are moments when one believes he/she is making the right and prudent decision, but I did learn that regardless of how one votes, there will always be consequences.
What is most popular in the public opinion could and often does influence and create pressure for city staff to revitalize their position on the issues of the day, and then they may or may not make an agenda item for that subject matter.
Medical Association Applauds Sandoval Medicaid Decision

Nearly 1.3 million Nevadans are registered to vote
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 12/04/2012 - 7:52amNearly 1.3 million Nevadans are registered as active voters at the end of November 2012, according to the Nevada Secretary of State's office.
The increase in active voter registration totals since the close of registration for the Nov. 6 general election is due in large part to the number of inactive voters who cast ballots and automatically became active voters according to federal and state law.
Envying The Fun In The Editor's Office

Carson City residents file in to vote in today's General Election
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 11/06/2012 - 2:47pmWith around 63 percent of Carson City's 26,000 voters taking care of business prior to today's General Election by showing up to the courthouse for early voting or casting their ballots by mail, voter turnout Tuesday has been a steady and even flow, election officials have observed.
There was an expected rush early when the polls opened, with 1,300 voters making it to the Carson City Community Center before 10 a.m., said Carson City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover. Otherwise turnout has been as expected: No long waits. No crowding.
