Solitary Confinement on Nevada Inmates Could Be Limited
Submitted by Nevada Media Alliance on Wed, 03/27/2013 - 11:59amThe use of solitary confinement in Nevada prisons could come under closer scrutiny if a senate bill regulating use of the practice passes the state legislature.
Senate Bill 107 would limit the use of solitary confinement on Nevada inmates, removing the ability to use isolation as a punishment and limiting the amount of time spent in solitary confinement. According to Nevada Department of Corrections information, Nevada has more than 300 inmates in ‘maximum’ custody, which is about two percent of the state’s prison population.

Nevada Urges Congress to Finally Pardon Boxer Jack Johnson

On July 4, 1910 Johnson defended his title against former boxing legend James Jeffries in Reno. He won the fight, but the victory ignited race riots all over the country.
Johnson had several relationships with white women, which only added to the outrage over his race. In October of 1912, Johnson was convicted for transferring women across state lines for immoral reasons.

Deer Run group adopts Carson City wild horses removed from BLM
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 03/23/2013 - 12:31pmA herd of wild horses removed from an area off of Deer Run Road last month were purchased Saturday at a Bureau of Land Management adoption in Carson City.
The BLM-sanctioned silent bid adoption was held at Silver Saddle Ranch. The horses were bought for $850 by the Deer Run Preservation Group in a collaborative effort with the American Wildhorse Preservation Campaign.
About 100 people attended the auction, many of whom were supporting the group and its efforts to save the horses.

Nevada May Become 12th State to Ban Horse Tripping

Nevada could join the ranks of eleven other states, including California, Florida and New Mexico if a Senate bill that bans the controversial practice of horse tripping is passed by the Legislature.
Horse tripping is a sporting event in which the hind or front legs of a galloping horse are roped, causing the animal to fall to the ground.

About 50 Carson City residents came together outside the Nevada Legislature today for a rally to raise awareness in the community for what has happened to the horses.
Coordinator Annie Jantzen says, "Even the Humane Society in Washington, DC is calling for the BLM to put these horses back on the range where they belong, and work with the community on solutions."

The advocates say the want the horses, picked up from the BLM last week, to be put back into the wild. The BLM contends the horses have been problematic and pose a safety hazard.

The Humane Society of the United States is the latest animal rights organization to denounce the Bureau of Land Management’s decision to remove a small band of wild horses located east of Carson City, Nev., in the Pine Nut Herd Management Area.

I spent most of January studying the faces of each Senatorial and Assembly lawmaker. I also tried to force myself to understand some of the bills, but I figured it would be better to just get the idea of it and learn along the way (which I did, and it worked). Reporting on big Nevada politics is new to me, and I’m eager to learn more.
