You won’t have to rush the kids to school today. It’s a professional development day for the Carson City School District, so make some snowmen, go bowling, or just stay home and watch movies. It’s going to be slick out there, please drive safely. Tonight, head to the Firkin and Fox for dinner and some karaoke. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club is at El Charro Avita this evening, which means there will be plenty of people to boogie with.

Batten down the hatches, Carson City, there’s a storm a’brewin. Feed your need for culture at the Brewery Arts Center where you’ll find Kenny Arnold’s exhibit ‘Free Your Soul.’ The Metropolitan Opera ‘Turandot’ plays live at the Galaxy Theater. Or enjoy Carson High School’s last performance of ‘And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank.’

The Brewery Arts Center is a triple threat tonight with the Carson High School play, an artist’s show and reception, and bluegrass band: the Dusty Green Bones. Enjoy Josh and Jenera at Living the Good Life while you dine, then stick around for DJ Bobby G. Wish Sassafras a happy birthday at their new location with local favorites, the Trippin King Snakes.

Welcome to Thursday, Carson City. A storm’s coming in, so go out and have some fun before the snow shows up. Sing your heart out at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar: it’s karaoke night. The Francis Humphrey Lecture Series returns to the Nevada State Museum with some freakish phenomenon found in the Black Rock Desert. Break a leg to the talented members of the Carson High Drama class performing at the Brewery Art Center. There will be three performances of ‘And Then They Came for Me,’ so don’t miss them in action.

Get your blood pumping today with a noon stroll with the Wellness Mile Walking Group at Carson Tahoe Hospital. It’s National Blood Donor Month: help your fellow Nevadans and donate some blood at Carson Mall where you’ll find the Bloodmobile parked near Dutch Bros. Coffee. Feed your craving for live music at Living the Good Life, Sassafras, and Glen Eagles.

Welcome back, Wildcats. The 2016 spring semester begins today at Western Nevada College. While you’re wandering around campus, make sure to check out the new exhibit in the Bristlecone building’s Main Gallery. Relax after your first day of classes with a tasting sampler at the Feisty Goat Pub. ‘Suds for Seniors’ is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and lets you try five of the draft beers on tap. Enjoy the Monday Night Music Series at Sierra Place Senior Living on West College Parkway. Sandi ‘Pipes’ Medley will be singing some jazz favorites.

It’s finally Friday, my fellow Carsonistas. Whether you are young or not as young as you used to be; single, coupled up or looking for family-friendly; introverted or extroverted, there is likely something on this list for you. Carson City offers all sorts of stuff to get you out of your home and mingling with your neighbors. I don’t know what tickles your particular fancy, so I just make sure I’ve got everything listed that I can find. It’s a living history kind of day with presentations all around. Head up to the Gold Hill Hotel for their weekly lecture series, but don’t forget to make a reservation. The Historical Society of Douglas County discusses the facts and fiction behind Lucky Bill at the Cultural Center and Museum in Gardnerville. The Nevada Division of the Pony Express Association keeps history alive and you are welcome to attend their monthly meeting at Grandma Hattie’s tonight. Pay homage to your favorite singers of yesteryear with karaoke at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Bring some art into your new year with one of our many art exhibits. The Nevada Artist Association has just switched up their gallery and has a New Year’s show to offer you. The group also works with the Carson Visitor Bureau and showcases a different artist each month in the Visitors’ Center: currently Bob Hickox. Comma Coffee is hosting a reception this evening for the January artist in their revolving Backseat Gallery, so head down at 5 p.m. for some finger food and the unveiling.

Welcome to Monday, Carson City. The holidays have passed and it’s time to embrace the new year. If you’re looking for some new hobbies and habits, try swing dancing. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets weekly at El Charro Avita. If you’re looking for more quality time with your family, then Nerdvana’s Family Game Night is a great way to have fun with the kids. Recycling your Christmas tree (sans decorations, of course) is an easy way to get your carbon footprint headed in the right direction.

It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. Kids will want to head to the Community Center for the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot. The best shooters in the state will advance to the national competition in Chicago for a chance at scholarship money.

Happy 2016, Carson City. A new year has been rung in and I hope you aren’t too hung over. Get a jump on any healthy new year’s resolutions with the annual First Day Hike. You can choose between Morgan Mill on the far east side of Carson City, the dunes of Washoe Lake State Park, or some history with a short hike to the Rock Point Mill in Dayton. Bundle up, though, it's cold out there. Let the party continue with DJ Bobby G at Living the Good Life or DJ Cillo at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Are you ready for tomorrow? New Year’s parties can be found where ever you go; check out a complete list here. No point in wasting today while waiting for the ball to drop, though. Plenty of fun to go around whether you’re in the mood for live music, dancing, or karaoke.

The very last Monday of the year has arrived, and I hope it treats you well. The kids still have one last week of vacation, so treat them to a day at the bowling alley. Carson Lanes has one dollar specials all day. Take a trip to Browser’s Corner Book Store to take advantage of their half off end of the year sale, and get your ticket for the Friends of the Library’s Black and White New Year’s Party while you’re there. A Sunday matinee is a perfect family friendly activity. If you find yourself at the Galaxy Theater this afternoon, check out the booth sponsored by NDOT and the Head Injury Association of Northern Nevada. You may walk away with a free bike helmet or be the lucky winner of a bike from Bike Habitat.
