March employment, unemployment for Carson City, Reno and Vegas show COVID-19 impact

CARSON CITY — Employment stats in early March, before the COVID-19 shutdown, shows Carson City having gained 400 jobs over March 2019 figures but had decreased significantly since February of this year, according to data released Tuesday by Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Carson City's unemployment also swelled to 6.7 percent, up from 4.1 percent in February, and up from 4.5 percent a year ago.

As reported last week, the statewide unemployment rate fell to 7 percent. The unemployment rate in the metro areas declined in May just as the statewide rate saw a decrease. The Reno and Sparks area is down to 6.1 percent, while the Las Vegas area rate fell to 6.6 percent.
