It’s your last chance to catch Senior Follies at the Community Center, and the Proscenium Players have a matinee of ‘Murder in an English Manor’ this afternoon, as well.

I hope you’re hungry, Carson City. Hungry and adventurous. The annual Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair hits Glen Eagles this weekend, and there will be plenty to sample. If you need something cold to drink, head to 7-ELEVEN for a free small slushee from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in celebration of Seven Eleven Day. The Farmers Market is always a good bet on Saturday mornings for sampling all the yummy stuff that grows nearby.

What a crazy week in the Sierras! Afternoon thunderstorms for the last several days, flooding, hail, and even snow in Yosemite are definitely unusual for this time of year. The storms are expected to subside this weekend, so keep your fingers crossed for some sunshine. Break a leg to the Proscenium Players as they open Murder in an English Manor at the Brewery Arts Center. Senior Follies debuts this year’s performance, Flashback, at the Community Center.

This time last year, Lake Tahoe made headlines around the world for an embarrassing amount of trash left on the beaches after the Fourth of July festivities. To prevent that from happening again, the community is rolling out a secret weapon: a humorous new campaign that aims to remind folks to take care of the region.

Splurge, (as defined at Dictionary.com) is: to indulge oneself in some luxury or pleasure. Its National Splurge Day, so treat yourself to some Taste of Downtown tickets. Head over to the Purple Avocado, Classy Seconds Gift Store, or the Chamber of Commerce and plan on indulging for a good cause. Indulge in some live music at the Brewery Arts Center tonight: Whatitdo from Reno will be playing in the Black Box Theater.

Western Nevada College has named 322 students to the Dean’s List for the 2015 spring semester. To qualify for WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Here are the graduates of Carson High School, class of 2015. Looking outward to their message left at C Hill, the class of more than 400 walked proudly Saturday through the Carson City CHS football field. With the turn of the tassel and throw of their mortarboards, the students turned high school graduates. Congratulations, class of 2015.

Western Nevada College has announced that it will graduate 515 students for the 2014-15 academic year. The 2015 commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 11 a.m. at the Marv Teixieira Pavilion in Mills Park, in Carson City.

The class of 2015 will receive 568 degrees and certificates.

Twenty nine Carson High Swim Team members qualified for the 2015 NIAA DIVISIONS I & I-A Northern Region Swimming and Diving Championship held Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

Eight team members qualified for the 2015 NIAA Division I Nevada State High School Swimming and Diving Championships which will be held Saturday, May 16 in Carson City.

The Fire is a high energy pure-drop Scottish music band, with world class fiddling in combination with bagpipes, guitar, bodhran, and whistle. They will appear tonight at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

This week's edition of Capital Crossfire features a discussion, "Saving Western Nevada Athletics, Are the Wildcats an Endangered Species?" The program features Helaine Jesse Morres, president of the Athletic Foundation of Western Nevada College and Garrett Lepire, youth sports advocate and serves on the Athletic Foundation board.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975, will present Autoharp Master, Singer and Storyteller Bryan Bowers on Saturday night, May 2 in the Maize Harris Jesse Black Box Theater.

From his rather unglamorous beginning as a street singer, Bryan Bowers has become a major artist on the traditional music circuit. He has redefined the autoharp and is also well known as a singer-songwriter. Bryan has a dynamic outgoing personality and an uncanny ability to enchant a crowd in practically any situation.

Litter. Dog poop. Unsafe fires. Bear safety. These are just some of the issues impacting our region. Wednesday, the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee unveiled the Take Care campaign to help reduce these impacts and promote a more responsible use of our great outdoors.

The campaign was designed for use in outreach efforts by public agencies, private businesses and nonprofit organizations in the region. Aimed at residents and visitors, the campaign is a series of reminders that poke fun at the mistakes we all make when we’re not paying attention.

Members of a community group that seeks to preserve intercollegiate athletics at Western Nevada College met with President Chet Burton Thursday in Carson City about the proposed initiative.
Both parties agreed conceptually to an agreement that would fund athletics through 2021, if new athletics fundraising goals can be met.

Phil Bickford and his history of being a top-10 selection in the 2013 Major League Baseball amateur draft didn't intimidate Western Nevada College hitters on Saturday in Carson City.
In fact, the Wildcats touched up the right-hander for two hits and a run before fans had completely settled into their seats at John L. Harvey Field.

Western Nevada College found its offense just in time Friday, preventing College of Southern Nevada from taking over first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
The Wildcats plated two fifth-inning runs to tie the score and then tallied five runs after two were out in the sixth to pull out a 9-4 baseball victory to gain a doubleheader split at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

A Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch Series recently launched offers a monthly forum for people to discuss and learn more about ways to strengthen communities, make towns safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, and help protect Lake Tahoe’s amazing natural resources.

Lunches are held monthly at ≈. They cover topics ranging from transportation to the economy and the environment, and offer a comfortable, low-key setting for people to discuss and learn about those issues. The events are free to the public.

An outside group has raised $129,500 to help save athletics at Western Nevada College. Helaine Jesse Morres, a former vice president at WNC, is organizing the fundraising effort. She said a group of about 50 people met Tuesday morning in Carson City as part of the effort save WNC baseball and softball.

March 13, in the Maizie Harris Jesse Black Box Theatre, the Brewery Arts Center presents the Men of Worth. The show starts at 7 p.m.

The Men of Worth's tunes and songs are so authentic, so closely connected to their heritage, that Scotsman Donnie Macdonald sings some in his native Gaelic; while Irishman James Keigher includes time-polished pieces saved from the oral traditions of his native County May.

Western Nevada College didn't take any cuts against 2013 Major League Baseball top-10 draft pick Phil Bickford on Wednesday night in Henderson, but the Wildcats did face some quality pitching.
Anthony Martine and three relievers combined to limit the Wildcats to six hits and second-ranked College of Southern Nevada held on for a 5-4 nonconference baseball victory.

"We schedule good teams on purpose so our mistakes get exposed," said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore. "We have to work on a lot of things to improve."

Western Nevada College has named 329 students to the Fall 2014 Dean’s List. For consideration to WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

For the first time, the Dean’s List includes students from WNC’s new Jump Start College, which offers high-achieving juniors and seniors from eight high schools in the region the opportunity to earn up to 48 college credits before graduating.

The public will have a chance to learn about agency efforts to address stormwater pollution and get involved at a stormwater symposium on Dec. 10 at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Since joining the Brewery Arts Center a month ago, I've had the pleasure of enjoying some memorable performances at the Maize Harris Jesse Black Box Theater. It left me wondering what took me so long to get on the BAC bandwagon.

First there were the haunting Celtic airs of kilted bagpipe player Sean Cummings, accompanied by harpist Anne Roos.

National Champion Steel String Fingerstyle Guitarist, Chris Proctor will appear in concert and offer a Guitar Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Brewery Arts Center's Maizie Harris Jesse Black Box Theater, 449 W. King St. in Carson City.

Proctor will be teaching a Steel String Guitar Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 16, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Fee is $40 and the only prerequisite is to know basic guitar chords and bring a steel string guitar.
