Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival to feature Motown events

A highlight of the 2015 Jazz & Beyond Festival will be a two-part Motown special. First is a free lecture-demonstration by musician-educator John Shipley. It will feature music, visuals, a guitar raffle, a no-host bar, and a guest appearance by Lloyd Williams of Otis Day and the Knights on Monday, August 17, at the Brewery Arts Center.

The second part of the Motown special is a ticketed concert showcasing Williams, the original singing voice from the hit movie Animal House, on Tuesday, August 18, 7 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

Millennium Bugs Jazz Combo plays Artown Wednesday in Reno

The Millennium Bugs, a five-piece combo affiliated with the Mile High Jazz Band, will play traditional jazz in an Artown concert on Wednesday, July 22, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., inside St. James Infirmary in Reno. The venue, a casual spot with a vintage feel, serves eclectic mixed drinks and beer inside and on the rooftop deck. Admission is free.

Band members are Dan Lancaster on saxes, clarinet, and flute; Gil Linsley on trumpet and flugelhorn; David Bugli on keyboard and trombone; George Worth on bass and trombone; and Hal Little on drums.

Mile High-Carson High Jazz Extravaganza Jan. 27 at the Carson City Community Center

It's "big-band jazz times three" when the Mile High Jazz Band, Carson High Jazz Band, and Carson Middle School Jazz Band present the 12th annual combined concert, the Mile High-Carson High Jazz Extravaganza..

The Extravaganza is Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, 7 p.m., in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. The event is sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and the Carson City Band Association as a benefit for Carson High instrumental music programs.

Because of unstable weather conditions in Carson City, the "Jazz & Beyond" music festival is moving its concerts for today, Sun., Aug. 10, from the Legislative Plaza to the Carson Mall. People are encouraged to hear Back Forty at 4:30 p.m. and CeCe Gable with the DG Kicks Octet at 6:00 p.m. People are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

Beatles Flashback tribute band on stage tonight at Carson City Community Center

Beatles Flashback, a Beatles tribute band formed in 2006, will be on stage tonight, Wednesday, at the Carson City Community Center as part of the Jazz & Beyond Carson City Music Festival.

While most people are familiar with Beatles tribute bands that dress up to look like the Fab Four, Beatles Flashback, a group that formed in Sonoma County, Calif., and is now based in Reno, focuses instead on recreating the music that is heard on the original recordings.

The Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival presents Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer Carl Sonny Leyland in concert on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St., Carson City.

"Jazz & Beyond" is a yearly festival put on by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and its sponsors. Admission to this concert is free. Donations are requested and include a chance at a door prize.

NV150 Fair events in Carson City continue Saturday with live music, carnival and livestock shows

NV 150 Fair events continue all day long Saturday at Fuji Park in Carson City. Parking is available at Casino Fandango, with shuttle bus service to and from the fairgrounds.

Among today's activities, there will be livestock shows, sales and demonstrations, carnival rides and games, fly tying demonstrations, cloggers, a dog show at 4 p.m. Sons of Slide Mountain Band beginning at noon, Youth Theater Carson City performance at 12:30 p.m.

On stage The Mountain Girls (band) at 4:30, Ranch Rodeo at 5 p.m., live music with CW Bayer and Mr. Spoons at 5:30 p.m.

Jazz and Beyond festival features Sunday 'Picnics in the Park' lineup

The "Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival," in collaboration with Carson City, is proud to present five of several bands at the Nevada Sesquicentennial Fair in Fuji Park on Saturday, August 2. "Jazz & Beyond" runs from Aug. 1 to Aug. 17 and features over 50 events, mainly in the downtown Carson City area.

The five "Jazz & Beyond" bands at the Fair on August 2 are Sons of Slide Mountain, RVGS Tantalus, Lynne Colvig Latin Jazz, the Reno Jazz Orchestra with singer Jackie Landrum, and the St. Christopher Project, featuring the music of Tom Waits.

Renowned trombonist Bill Watrous to appear at Jazz and Beyond concert series

The Mile High Jazz Band is proud to present legendary trombonist Bill Watrous in concert and in a master class on Monday, Aug. 11, at the Carson City Community Center.

Jazz and Beyond seeks volunteers for annual Carson City music festival

The "Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" will hold a kick-off meeting for organizers and potential volunteers on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Conference Room, 1200 S. Carson St., Carson City. This year's festival is scheduled to run from Aug. 1 to 17 at multiple locations in Carson City.

Dulcimer musicians In Stride perform Saturday at Carson City Library BRIC facility

Carson City Dulcimer and Friends will perform in cooperation with Jazz & Beyond, the 2013 Carson City Music Festival.

Come and enjoy these musicians as they entertain using the dulcimer, an acoustic instrument, known for its soft, mellow sounds.

History of Rock n' Roll presentation Aug. 6 at Brewery Arts Center

Musician and educator John Shipley will present a lecture and demonstration with slides and audio samples on the history of rock n' roll, concluding with questions and comments from the audience and the raffle of an electric guitar. The talk will be on Tuesday, August 6, 7-8:30 p.m., at Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City. Admission is free.

Annual Carson City Historical Society Ice Cream Social this Saturday

With tradition, community spirit and the launch of the Carson City jazz festival in mind, residents are welcome to a cool summer evening with music and sweet treats as the Carson City Historical Society hosts its annual Ice Cream Social this Saturday.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and feature live music, mountain men and quilters. The event takes place at Foreman-Roberts House Park, 1207 North Carson Street. The event is free to get in and costs $3 to enjoy the ice cream and cookies.

Millennium Bugs to Perform Sept. 7 at Silver Oak in Carson City

The Millennium Bugs, a five-piece combo affiliated with the Mile High Jazz Band, will perform on Friday, Sept. 7, 7:00 to 10 p.m., at Silver Oak Golf Club and Event Center, 1251 Country Club Drive, Carson City. Admission is free.
The musicians are Gil Linsley, trumpet; Dan Lancaster, sax, flute, clarinet; David Bugli, keyboard; Charles DiLaura, bass; and Neil Strocchio, drums. The group plays a variety of jazz styles for listening and dancing.  

Strings in the Schools program begins Sept. 5

Carson City Symphony's comprehensive program of string instruction begins the first week of September, after school, at three schools in Carson City. Strings in the Schools, directed by the Symphony's Education Director, Sue Jesch, provides free beginning violin lessons for students grades 2-5 and ensemble/orchestra experience for string students in all grades. Tuition and books are subsidized by the Carson City Symphony Association.

Jazz All-Stars Display at Carson City Library until August 31

An exhibit of photos, album covers, and information about Jazz All-Stars of Northern Nevada, is on display at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop Street. The exhibit is part of Mile High Jazz Band's 2012 Jazz & Beyond - Carson City Music Festival. Although festival musical performances have ended, the exhibit will continue during library hours until August 31.

Carson City goes full-board live music with Jazz and Beyond Music Festival in August

The summer sizzles as the Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses and jazz lovers proudly present the 2012 "Jazz & Beyond" Carson City Music Festival, an annual event that began in August 2004. Performances at multiple venues in Carson City will feature more than 100 musicians in over 50 bands, Aug. 3-19 and are mainly free. Music styles include Dixieland jazz, big band, bluegrass, Latin, blues and folk.
