Can you believe it? It’s the last weekend of July and the kids will be headed back to school in no time. Don’t be dismayed though, plenty of summer fun can still be found. Sign the kids up for the Capital City Kids’ Triathlon at the Carson Aquatic Center. Head out to Mills Park for a few laps on the train or a picnic. Don’t miss out on making a bowl for the Empty Bowls project at the Farmers Market; or let the kids run off to the bounce house while you make a bowl yourself.

SATURDAY:

  • Capital City Kids' Triathlon: Swim, Bike, Run at the Carson Aquatic Center: 841 N. Roop St. (registration begins at 7:30am, must check in 30 minutes prior to start time; $25 same day registration; ages 13-18 8am start; ages 11-12 8:45am start; ages 9-10 9:30am start; ages 7-8 10am start; ages 4-6 10:30am; must provide own bike and mandatory helmet)
  • Poker Ride and Ice Cream Social hosted by Nevada All State Trail Riders at Silver Saddle Ranch: 4901 Carson River Rd (sign in 8am; $20 per poker hand; hikers, cyclists, and horse riders will each have own trail; begin at 9am)

This fourth Thursday of July has been declared National Refreshment Day; teamed up with National Hot Dog Day and Vanilla Ice Cream Day, today should be yummy. More good eats can be found at the Farmers Market in Dayton. All you can eat wings at Firkin and Fox is a popular way to spend a Thursday, or sample something exotic at curry-tasting at Foodies Bystro inside the Brewery Arts Center.

  • One Putt Jr. Academy at Silver Oak Golf Course (7:45am sign in, 8am-10am; $40 per class or $200 for six classes: includes Green Fees, Pull Cart, Golf Clubs, Gatorade; space limited, ages 7-12)

Thunderstorms are on the horizon, so seize the day and enjoy the sunshine while it’s here. Muscle Powered has organized a monthly trash mob to help keep our trails clean, join them at US Bank to help out. The Ghost Walk returns: meet behind the Firkin and Fox for some local haunted history. Teens will enjoy a ‘Night at the Library’ with pizza and games. And as always, the Nevada State Railroad Museum beckons: this week with rides on the Steam Train available.

Carson City Wine Walk celebrates July 4 with a show of local patriotism

The rain Saturday didn't dampen July 4 wine walkers in downtown Carson City. With all the stops in place, maps and wine glasses in hand, these wine walkers brought their partiotic spirit with them, tasting assorted red and white varietals.

Every first Saturday of the month more than 30 shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors to the crowds of merry-makers. It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

Rain, shine, or fireworks, the wine walk goes on. It may be the Fourth of July, but there’s just no stopping the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Downtown Wine Walk. The solstice couldn’t come at a better time: we need some long days to get through all the fun stuff Carson City has crammed into one weekend. The annual Powwow at the Stewart Indian School runs Friday through Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the dancing, peruse the crafts, and eat an Indian Taco. Don’t miss the Fly-in and Open House at the Carson City Airport: fun for the whole family. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of Carson City’s favorite events: the Taste of Downtown. Music, food, and more from Carson Mall to Williams Street. Have a great time, and be safe.

Annual Carson City Historical Society Ice Cream Social this Saturday

With tradition, community spirit and the launch of the Carson City jazz festival in mind, residents are welcome to a cool summer evening with music and sweet treats as the Carson City Historical Society hosts its annual Ice Cream Social this Saturday.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and feature live music, mountain men and quilters. The event takes place at Foreman-Roberts House Park, 1207 North Carson Street. The event is free to get in and costs $3 to enjoy the ice cream and cookies.

A tribute to Rosemary Clooney and an ice cream social with live music will kick off a month-jazz extravaganza for the 8th annual Jazz! Carson City Music Festival.

Silver City Plans a Summer Full of Family Fun

The Silver City Community Partners, formerly known as the Silver City Task Force, has announced a full summer schedule of community events and programs. The tightknit community of Silver City works together to offer a free summer youth program, monthly community dinners, cultural events, a volunteer library, cooking lessons, and a community garden.

Carson City Historical Society Ice Cream Social

Come join the fun on a cool summer evening when the Carson City Historical Society hosts their annual Ice Cream Social. Special ice cream and cookies will be available for $4 per person — and children attending will be able to build their own birdhouse courtesy of Jim DeMagistris of Woodworking Specialties. The evening will be filled with music as David Bugli's "Millennium Bugs" who will play during the event. The Ice Cream Social is on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.
