Heading into the weekend, there’s a number of activities, gatherings, virtual or not, happening around the Carson City region. Safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing.

Writing this on Wednesday, Sept. 18, the morning temperature reading was 37 degrees and Tuesday it was 35 degrees. If the cold nights didn’t alert me that fall is near, my flowers and trees would. Leaves are turning yellow on the neighborhood poplars and ash trees. Some maples are already changing to autumn oranges and reds.

The Pokémon Go Carson City group joined forces with Fallon, Fernley, Sparks, Reno and South Lake Tahoe Pokémon Go groups to hold the first Northern Nevada All Community Day event — and the biggest community day yet for Carson City — bringing more than 150 enthusiasts to Mills Park on Saturday for competition and prizes, food and family fun.

Nevada Humanities has announced the winners of the statewide Letters About Literature program. 243 students from Nevada submitted entries to the national competition at the Library of Congress, and nine Nevada students placed in the top three of their respective judging categories and will be honored in a ceremony in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The first place winners in each category will represent Nevada at the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Good Day Carson City, it is Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018. The winter weather continues today albeit without any storm watches or warnings this morning. Light snow showers will continue today and and pick up tonight with less than an inch possible. As always be careful out on the roads. You'll be able to warm up at a number of venues today, including a holiday swing party with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at Casino Fandango's new Grand Ballroom and at the Carson City School District Orchestra Program concert at the community center.

The Carson City School District Orchestra Program performs the second of four school-year concerts for the general public on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018 at the Community Center with free admission.

Under the direction of Dr. Brian Fox, the CCSD Orchestras is a blooming school music program in Carson City. Come to the Holiday Concert to hear Holiday favorites, as well as Mozart, Brahms, and music from Harry Potter.

The middle of the week can move slowly. Break the routine with something different. e Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour has returned to Carson City and brings a tea offering to the Brewery Arts Center. The CCAI exhibit in the Courthouse Gallery, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ by artist Susanne Forestieri, closes tomorrow. You won’t want to miss your chance to see her stunning work. WEDNESDAY, Jan. 17: Things to do in Carson City

Playing in the snow probably isn’t an option for this weekend, but Singing in the Rain sure is. The kids of Youth Theater Carson City present a junior adaptation of the musical favorite this weekend and next. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts ‘Young Eagle’ flights every few months at the Carson Airport to give kids 8 – 17 a plane ride to remember. Help out the Dayton Food Bank during their ‘Stuff-a-Cop-Car’ food drive at the Smith’s in Dayton; unexpired non-perishables of all kinds are appreciated. SATURDAY:

Ready for the long weekend filled with friends, family, and food? Get in the celebratory spirit with some live jazz at Living the Good Life or country dancing at Carson Lanes. If you’re over 18, you are welcome to check out the karaoke party at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge. A young wizaard discovers his destiny on the big screen; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at Fandango’s Galaxy Theater is a perfect family-friendly outing.

Sunday is usually synonymous with football this time of year. Raiders fans, and non-fans for that matter, are invited to the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes to watch the game and join in the annual Adopt-a-Senior Fundraiser. If you’ve got a bibliophile on your gift list, the Nevada State Museum has got you covered. You’ll get the chance to meet ten notable Nevadan authors, learn more about our great state, and get a signed copy one of the many books available. Read on and enjoy your weekend.

With Thanksgiving just days away, the holiday season is just around the corner. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes. There’s even more to enjoy this weekend, so keep reading for your options.

This weekend is going to be packed. Vintage Airstreams will line the streets, a wine walk, the Aviation Roundup in Minden, Virginia City’s Outhouse Races, Oktoberfest at Fandango: and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Get a jump on the festivities tonight with plenty of live music, two artists’ receptions, karaoke, comedy, or the Witchcraft and Wizardry Ball at the Boys and Girls Club. Join in solidarity with our famous city to the south by wearing blue and silver today and attending the Candlelight Vigil at the Capitol Building.

Witchcraft and Wizardry Ball is Oct 6 at 8pm. There is a DJ, a bar, a pizza truck, and Harry Potter entertainment. Online tickets at $10 and at the door they are $15. You get your first two drinks free. All proceeds go to the Boys and Girls Club.

Street Vibrations is a celebration of all things motorcycle, but today the only cycle that truly matters is the three-wheeled one that belongs to Glen Lucky. A lot of towns have local celebrities; most everyone has seen Glen Lucky on the side of the road, pushing his bike to take him further. Today, the Nevada State Museum invites everyone to help Lucky celebrate his 65th birthday, complete with cake and a huge group photo.

The Carson City Library has some noteworthy programs on their calendar. Be sure to partipcate in the monthly NASA@ My Library programs for compelling learning experiences for our community and share the story, science and adventure of NASA’s scientific explorations of planet Earth, our solar system and the universe beyond.

Silver City, Nevada - Many groups and volunteers came together once again to make the annual summer program in Silver City a success. Each year since 2003, Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey (HCC) has co-sponsored some of the free, public programming in STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math - that the historic Comstock community offers annually in partnership with nearly a dozen groups and lots of community volunteers.

Western minds, Western eyes, and Western culture have difficulty accepting or even understanding what is happening to Israel today, especially with its Islamic neighbors. The utter significance of this piece of real estate seems remote and of little concern to so many. Even those who consider themselves "up to speed" with the news often neglect to read, digest, and think about the ancient history of this region of the world. Perhaps the most required reading material is that of the Bible, the world's most read book of all times. We can read from as many books, etc.

This year’s Winterfest theme is hanging out with Harry Potter, and the plan is to turn CHS into Hogwarts with teachers creating a Hogwarts’ themed door followed by a door decorating contest.

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra will delight young and old with a lineup of musical selections with a “Flight of Fantasy” theme, at their annual fall concert, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley CVIC Hall.

This free concert will feature selections from Star Wars, Star Trek, music from Apollo 13, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, among others. Led by Co-Conductors Stephanie Reynolds and C.J. Birch, former band director at Carson High, this performance is a perfect way to celebrate the changing of the seasons with your friends and family.

McFadden Plaza is where you’ll find Jazz and Beyond’s concert with the Jackie Landrum Band, Living the Good Life is serving up a performance by Prey for Son, or take the stage yourself at Carson Lanes’ karaoke. The beautiful back lawn of the Nevada Governor's Mansion is the site of the Carson City Symphony's 29th annual Pops Party concert on Sunday, June 9, at 3:00 p.m. The program, "At the Movies," features the Carson City Symphony, Carson City Symphony Chorus, Youth Strings, and guest singer Jakki Ford. Grounds open and pre-concert entertainment by the Symphony Flutes begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
