Carson City Library has been selected through a competitive application process to be part of NASA@ My Library, an initiative to engage public audiences nationwide in informal and lifelong learning with the excitement of NASA exploration and discovery.

SILVER CITY — Each summer since 2003, the historic Comstock community of Silver City has partnered with Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey to organize a free, public program with guest teachers leading fun, hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

May is a month to celebrate historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada.

Nevada agencies and organizations have worked to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

The following are scheduled events throughout Nevada:

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Nevada Builders Alliance has been chosen to receive one of three Outstanding Community Partnership Awards for 2016-17 by Washoe County School District’s Signature Academies & Career and Technical Education during “Salute to Signatures & CTE,” the program’s annual showcase.

The event takes place at the Academy of Arts, Careers & Technology, 380 Edison Way in Reno, Thursday, May 4, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Recognized as one of a handful of the most haunted towns in the U.S., Virginia City rattles the chains, cages, ballroom floor and railroad tracks for the rest of the month as part of its “Hauntober” celebration, offering up ghostly adventures culminating Oct. 31, Nevada Day and Halloween.

These Ides of March have nothing to be wary of. Check out S.T.E.A.M. Night at Eagle Valley Middle School for hands on activities to learn from. Nevada Neighbors, Capital City Arts Initiative’s lecture series, features a talk by Paul Baker Prindle, Director and Curator of University Galleries, UNR’s art museum. Take an early spring stroll at Fuji Park during this week’s Carson City Parks and Recreation Easy Walk.

Like all students of Carson High School over the past 16 years, Honors Student Tyler Warren, since his freshman year, thought about what he would be doing for his senior project, a graduation requirement for every student who hopes to receive a diploma from CHS.

Fort Churchill State Historic Park in Silver Springs is offering a variety of ranger-led programs during the month of September. Programs highlight the area’s rich history and abundant natural resources.

CSI: Critter Scene Investigation Fort Churchill:

Learn about the universe, the origin and development of humans on Earth, and the possibility of life on other planets, in two Western Nevada College astronomy classes offered his fall. Planetary Astronomy and Introduction to Astrobiology will offer the opportunity to learn from a scientist with ties to space industry.

After 12 years, the annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids open house Saturday was among the biggest yet, with dozens of families and hundreds of children taking part in games, contests and information events well into the late morning and into the afternoon.

The popular community event is aimed at children of all ages and their families as a way introduce public safety agencies, especially law enforcement, to them. The event is part family carnival without the rides, and part educational experience, where music, food, contests, songs and dancing are the orders of the day.

With more than 1,400 hot dogs and buns, 700 sodas, 800 bottles of water, coffee, music, games and prizes all dished up and out to the community Saturday, the 12th Annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids Open House will roll out rain or shine, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The 12th annual Carson City Sheriff's Office "Cops and Kids" Open House, billed as the "Safest Street Party in Carson City," will be this Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the sheriff's office, 911 East Musser Street.

The free community event features, activities, ID kits for children, food, music, games and more. On hand will be the sheriff's office K9 dogs, motorcycle patrol unit, Special Enforcement Team, stellar squad, a new SWAT unit, representatives from DARE, and the Nevada Highway Patrol.

From the Carson City Library on April 14 at 6 p.m. a group of six engineers are slated to cut the grand opening ribbon on a traveling exhibit supported by the National Science Foundation, titled Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference.

Nevada State Engineer Mr. Jason King, P.E. as well as five previous Nevada State Engineers who served in the top post starting from 1967 through 2010 will join King to celebrate arrival of the engineering-focused interactive exhibit.

With neighborhood outreach as the theme, Carson City Sheriff's Office organizers say the National Night Out event at Mills Park on Tuesday will also highlight a number of new community wide initiatives.

The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and brings thousands of Carson City residents to the park annually in a open house environment, providing partnerships between law enforcement and the community. In Carson City, this event represents the culmination of efforts made to address crime, drugs, and violence and is the largest event of its kind in the area.

Alternative energy and transportation come to Nevada's oldest settlement for the 7th Annual Green Living Festival on Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. This free event features sustainable living workshops, exhibitors, food (made using alternative energy), networking, and hands-on activities for families, all on the The Nature Conservancy's 800 acre River Fork Ranch, minutes from historic Genoa and the scenic Genoa Trail System. With sunny skies, a gentle breeze and plenty of children and their parents, the 10th annual Cops and Kids open house, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday, lived up to its reputation as the safest party on the street.

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.

The safest party on the streets of Carson City is set for Saturday, May 18.

Seven years ago, Lisa Stocke-Koop opened up her Carson Middle School classroom to a science and technology night where her students and their parents could participate in hands-on activities and see community demonstrations.

On a sunny afternoon, 15 workers are waist deep in a half-acre pond, tromping through 46-degree water and dragging a 120-foot net to catch several hundred small fish.

The fingerling yellow perch are being pulled from the water to be part of studies of the small fish, which is being introduced as an alternate commercial species in Alabama.
