A case for a Congressional candidate with common sense and mutual respect for Congress
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 05/17/2020 - 1:45pmThe polarizing attitudes and ideology that has taken over the American political environment -- as witnessed in recently-held political debates and rallies, nationwide -- is a danger to traditional American democratic values of diversity and respect of the “marketplace of ideas”, where people are not listening to each other, where respect for diversity is lacking, where the prevailing political attitude seems to be “my way or the highway”.

Northern Nevada is tinder dry: Is your home firesafe?
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 11/11/2019 - 10:29amIn 2003, I wrote an article on making a home firesafe. I started with this “The raging fires in California are a terrible reminder of the wildfire risk of living in the urban-wildland interface.” Now, 16 years later, that initial sentence bears repeating. With climate change, global warming we are seeing hotter, more intense, faster spreading wildfires than ever before. Fuels such as brush, grasses and trees are tinder dry everywhere, including Northern Nevada.
JoAnne Skelly column: Tired of Gardening Yet? Prepare now for the first frost
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 09/08/2019 - 11:30amAbout this time of year, I find my interest in gardening waning a bit. For one thing, it’s hot. For another, it’s already September and the first frost may not be far off, so why bother. In years past, I reminded people to expect the first frost around September 15 in most areas.

Boomers’ Sad Overall Legacy to Children (Opinion)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 06/05/2019 - 6:02amThis is my final column on the sad legacy we Boomers are leaving our children.
The first one defined the public interest as mainly maximizing economic growth. That piece and the next showed that the economic policies, practices and institutions that maximize growth also promote fairness among individuals. They also debunked obsessions with income inequality. The third part focused on the 21st Century revival of progressivism and statist liberalism, plus the addition of political correctness (PC).
Here I offer directions for some solutions.

JoAnne Skelly: Is Pampas grass a problem?
Submitted by editor on Sat, 10/22/2016 - 4:40pmMy friend Paul asked me to write about pampas grass, Cortaderia selloana, which in some parts of the country has become a problem invasive plant. While it is not on the noxious weed list (listed as noxious by law) for Nevada or California, Nevada plant ecologists consider it potentially invasive in the Las Vegas area and the California Invasive Plant Council has categorized it as a “high” threat to the state’s wildlands.
JoAnne Skelly: Landscaping, gardening helps carbon capture and sequestration
Submitted by editor on Sat, 08/27/2016 - 1:02pmAtmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most significant greenhouse gas and it plays a major role in global warming and climate change. Organic carbon in the soil and plant biomass (plants and their debris) originates from atmospheric CO2.
Climate change still science, not law
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 11/10/2015 - 5:04pmScience is a process, not a doctrine. It asks questions and sets out to test them for answers. But our culture seems to regard science in an animate form, like a guru seated atop a mountain.
We put science on a pedestal and submit to it as the final authority on all of our problems and important questions. We rely on science to give us the answers.
We even permit science to be the driving force behind public policy, in spite of the fact that science is a search for questions that remain unanswered.
Take the issues of climate change and global warming.

Science of climate change is convoluted!
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 05/22/2015 - 3:14pmMr. Bush, we have some folks you can to talk to about climate change
By Mark Reynolds
It makes me nervous when someone who might become president of the United States says the science on climate change is “convoluted” and that it is “arrogant” to assert that humans are the primary cause of global warming.
That’s what happened recently when Jeb Bush, the still-undeclared presidential candidate, said the following at a campaign-style event in New Hampshire:

How New Emissions Restrictions Affect Nevada
Submitted by editor on Tue, 06/03/2014 - 6:23amThe Obama administration is laying out plans to cut carbon dioxide emissions from power plants by 30 percent by 2030 to reduce global warming. States must come up with plans to meet their individualized targets, which will vary across the nation. States will have until 2017 and in some cases 2018 to submit their cleanup plans. Here's how the plan affects Nevada:
The Greens’ Peak-Oil Limits-to-Growth Apocalypse That Wasn’t
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 04/09/2014 - 8:49amA few years ago, some experts predicted the world was about to reach a peak in global oil and gas production to be followed soon by marked decline. It would cause “war, famine, pestilence and death” – the biblical Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Another version: “war, starvation, economic recession, possibly even the extinction of homo sapiens.”
Apocalypse now: population bomb to global warming
Submitted by admin on Tue, 04/01/2014 - 9:12am“The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famines – hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death …”
So began The Population Bomb, a 1968 advocacy book by Dr. Paul Ehrlich. He indicted American affluence and uncontrolled procreation as key parts of the over-population apocalypse he foresaw and thus as pernicious problems to be solved by Draconian public-sector and even international action.
