With the August completion of a 180-kW rooftop array at Western Nevada College in Carson City, nonprofit Black Rock Solar has reached the milestone of building five megawatts of solar power capacity across the state of Nevada. The 83 clean energy projects built by Black Rock Solar since its 2007 founding include arrays for schools, hospitals, food banks, homeless shelters and Native American tribes. These arrays have been built at little or no cost to the recipients, but now provide more than $725,000 of combined savings annually on the organizations’ energy bills.

Black Rock Solar, a nonprofit corporation in Reno that specializes in expanding the use of renewable energy, just completed installation of 666 panels atop the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City campus. At 180 kilowatts, the project is Black Rock’s largest roof array to date.

Proposed 2015 health insurance for individual and small group markets in Nevada are now available online, state Insurance Commissioner Scott J. Kipper announced Thursday. The proposed rates are for plans sold both on and off Nevada’s health insurance exchange.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei’s bill known as Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Fish Springs Ranch Settlement Act, by a bipartisan voice vote.

The bill, H.R. 3716, would ratify an agreement between the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and Fish Springs Ranch to resolve a dispute over water rights near Reno. It is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed into law.

The Carson City Chamber is pleased to sponsor the popular Comstock Cowboys as the featured act at the Nevada 150 Fair as their commitment to the success of this first-ever fair to be held at Fuji Park later this month.

Chamber Chair Terrie McNutt states, “The Chamber board voted unanimously to support the fair by funding the Comstock Cowboys as our contribution to what could become a major economic boom to our city this year and in the future.”

CARSON CITY – A panel of lawmakers and educators on Monday recommended that Nevada’s public education funding formula include more money for students in poverty or with limited English proficiency.

The Carson City Symphony's "Strings in the Summer" orchestra and beginning fiddle class, directed by Sue Jesch, will present its Summer String Concert of traditional American fiddle tunes on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at Sierra Place Senior Living, 1111 West College Parkway, Carson City. The concert is free and is open to the public.

The move is complete and experiments are underway in the University of Nevada, Reno’s new Earthquake Engineering Laboratory. The College of Engineering hosted a grand opening today celebrating the new lab space in the world-renowned seismic engineering facility.

CARSON CITY – A legislative panel on Thursday approved $3.5 million in funding sought by Gov. Brian Sandoval to take several immediate steps to improve Nevada’s overwhelmed mental health delivery system.

Two local programs, Nevada Indian Territory and Ventana Sierra, Inc., received grant money from the Nevada Commission on Tourism designed to increase travel to the Carson City area.

The money is part of $985,146 in grant funding for projects throughout rural Nevada designed to increase travel to those areas, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced Wednesday at the commission’s quarterly meeting.

Nevada counties will receive more than $25 million in federal Payment in Lieu money from the U.S. Department of Interior, Sen. Harry Reid announced Thursday.

Among the counties to receive PILT money, Washoe County will receive $3,446,375; Lyon County, $2,080,651; Douglas County, $653,884; Carson City $120,016 and Storey County, $37,402.

Northern Nevada Development Authority was recently awarded a $600,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that will be used to identify underused redevelopment sites in Lyon and Churchill counties.

The assessment grant allows NNDA to evaluate and catalog areas that had been considered environmentally contaminated. The grant will be used as a future road map for redeveloping effected sites and is the first step in creating projects directly geared toward economic development.

USDA Rural Development will hold a workshop June 12 to help rural small businesses and agricultural producers apply for the federal Rural Energy for America Program funds.

Invasive aquatic species watercraft inspection and decontamination stations have opened at Lahontan Reservoir and other waterways in time for Memorial Day weekend, according to the Nevada Division of State Parks.
