A Carson City walking tour highlighting the homes of former Nevada governors is being offered on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month by the Friends of the Nevada State Museum. The 9 a.m. tour, which begins in front of Museum, is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25, Aug. 8, Aug. 22, Sept. 12 and Sept. 26. Local history buffs Ron Roberts and Debbie Lane alternate as tour guides.

Tour guide trainees sought ahead of 75th anniversary of Nevada State Museum

The Nevada State Museum celebrates El Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2015. Day of the Dead is a multicultural celebration of life through death. In this wholesome family holiday, participants learn to deal with death in a healthy way by celebrating the lives of dear ones that has passed away. This year’s keynote address, Day of the Dead: A Celebration of Life by Deborah Stevenson, curator of education, begins at 11 a.m.

Carson City to celebrate 'Day of the Dead' at Nevada State Museum

All cultures celebrate the dead as well as mourn them. And the first of November usually marks the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos. In Carson City there will be a multicultural celebration Saturday, November 10, to honor loved ones who have passed away with stories, crafts, songs and exhibits, colorful folklore dancers. The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum.

Carson City Mint Coin Show

Coin collectors and numismatists from all over the country will be flocking to Carson City August 26-27 to purchase the coveted Mint Mark “CC” coins and other collectibles. In fact, the hobby of coin collecting is more popular than ever before, thanks to the high price of gold. Twenty-five dealers will be on hand from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm both Friday and Saturday, giving free appraisals and offering valuable wares to buy, sell, and trade. Fabulous prizes will be raffled off both days, culminating in the Grand Prize Drawing at 3 pm on Saturday.

In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Nevada Territory, The Nevada State Museum staff designed a unique raffle prize to celebrate this year’s coin show in Carson City, August 26-27, 2011. Raffle tickets are now on sale for the Grand Prize, featuring three special commemoratives: one ounce .999 fine silver medallion, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Nevada Territory; copper Abraham Lincoln Medallion; and brass Nevada State Seal Medallion.

Collectors from as far as Florida and New York are in Carson City this weekend to gawk and potentially buy priceless pieces of historic minted coins and printed paper money in what has become a must-attend event for serious numismatists.

The Carson City Mint Coin Show at the Nevada State Museum will be Aug. 27-28 and offers something for everyone. Held both days from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the show features over 30 dealers, free appraisals and kids activities.

“From fabulous raffles prizes to numismatic education and gold panning, this year’s coin show promises to be fun for the whole family,” said Curator of Education, Deborah Stevenson. “With the price of gold going sky-high, all of us should take up panning for gold.”

Carson City railroad history celebrated with arrival of McKeen Motor Car V&T No. 22

CARSON CITY — It was 'all aboard' the historic McKeen Motor Car V&T No. 22 on Sunday for dozens of railroad enthusiasts as the Nevada State Railroad Museum celebrated a milestone 100th anniversary commemorating the iron horse's arrival to the Carson City railroad.

The celebration was at the platform of the historic Wabuska Depot. Numerous local, state and federal officials and noted railroad historians participated in the event, trading stories and history references, and taking turns riding the car.

The Bernhard family, donors of the car, were the honored guests.
