Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 31st season of the Nutcracker Ballet, a Feast with a Hero fundraiser at Slot World, Small Business Saturday throughout Carson City and Carson Valley, photos with Santa, a Telegraph Square sign dedication, Polar Express train rides at the V&T Railroad and more!

University of Nevada, Reno battles University of Nevada, Las Vegas for the Fremont Cannon Saturday, Nov. 30, and the Nevada Builders Foundation is raffling off a gift package filled with UNR goodies and more.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – History buffs and treasure hunters continue to search wide swaths of Nevada for remnants left behind by famed explorer John C. Fremont and his Corps of Topographical Engineers who traversed the region in 1843-44.

Once the turkey has been devoured, all thoughts turn toward shopping. Shop Small Saturday helps to throw a spotlight on our local gems, and the great gifts you’ll find. New this year is Museum Store Sunday with both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum participating. From 120 members in 2012 to 180 in 2014, the University of Nevada, Reno has seen its marching band, the “Pride of the Sierra,” grow in numbers, support and pride.

Kicking off during Saturday’s Wolf Pack football game against Southern Utah, Greater Nevada Credit Union continues its fundraising campaign, “It’s Time to Support the Band.”

John Wilusz, civil engineer and member of the Fremont Howitzer Recovery Team presents “Searching for Fremont’s Lost Cannon” at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 22 as part of the Frances Humphrey Lecture Series.

He described and mapped the Oregon Trail, was the Republican Party’s first presidential candidate, and served as California’s military governor in 1847.

Nevada House Representatives Dina Titus, Professor Emerita at UNLV, and Mark Amodei, a University of Nevada alumnus, Friday announced a friendly wager on Saturday’s football game between the Runnin' Rebels and the Wolf Pack in Reno.

In honor of “Make A Difference Day,” they will perform a community service project with the losing member sporting the opposing team’s sweatshirt and supplying the victor with an appropriate colored Fremont Cannon replica.

With a sneak peak at an exhibit honoring Western explorer John C. Fremont, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City will celebrate free admission day from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20.
