Director: Major changes needed to fund government services

CARSON CITY – Nevada could find a way out of its $3 billion revenue shortfall next year without raising taxes, but only if the Legislature looks at restructuring the way the state and local governments provide and pay for services, the state’s top fiscal officer said yesterday.

Nugget Project update: a look at the Meridian report

Last week we reported that the governor's office sent a letter to Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis taking issue with certain parts of the feasibility study for moving three state agencies into the Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

Thousands attend National Night Out event in Carson City

The first Northern Nevada RC Air Show hosted by the High Sierra RC Club took place Saturday at the Pony Express Model Airpark.

Radio Control Clubs from all over Northern Nevada participated in the event The High Sierra RC Club, Reno Radio Control Club, Sierra Silent Soarers, Reno Sparks Control Liners Model Airplane Club and Sierra Sagebrush Flyers.

25th annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival

The 25th Annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival takes place the weekend of Aug 13-15. The weekend opens at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13 with a free open-air concert at the Davis Creek Park Amphitheater. The main Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival takes place from 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14 on the Bowers Mansion grounds, gate opens at 9 a.m., Cost $15 adults, $3 kids 2-12. Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic continues through Sunday

Hundreds of car enthusiasts from Nevada and California made their way to Mills Park in Carson City today for the annual Carson City Silver Dollar Car Classic.
The car show, which continues through Sunday, is among the region's biggest draws, with more than 300 restored, tricked-out, and souped-up cars and trucks on display.
Saturday's ideal weather conditions and the tree coverage of Mills Park made it a great event for the entire family, organizers said.

Carson City Sheriff's Office hosts 27th National Night Out on Tuesday

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the National Association of Town Watch will co-sponsor the 27th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event at Mills Park on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Carson City will join forces with thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, more than 36 million people are expected to participate in America’s Night Out Against Crime.

Taxable Sales Edge Down In May After Rare Up Month in April

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s taxable sales fell 1.9 percent in May over May 2009, a decline following April which saw the first positive month for the economic indicator in 20 months, the state Department of Taxation reported today.
May statewide taxable sales totaled $3.1 billion compared to $3.2 billion in May 2009.

Gardnerville resident identified as the woman who died in the Carson City Jail

A Gardnerville woman has been identified by authorities as being the woman who died in the Carson City Jail on Sunday.
Kimberly Wood, 23, died Sunday morning for unknown reasons. An autopsy was performed today, Tuesday, with results not expected for several weeks, Carson City Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Steve Albertsen said.
Wood was found dead on Sunday morning in the Carson City jail after she had been arrested on Saturday night, on a warrant from Lyon County. 
Authorities had made contact with Wood and a man she was with during a domestic dispute that happened while driving.

Investigation underway after woman dies in Carson City Jail

A woman was found dead on Sunday morning in the Carson City jail after she had been arrested on Saturday night, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
The 23-year-old woman was arrested on a warrant from Lyon County. Her name has not been released.
Authorities had made contact with the woman and a man she was with during a domestic dispute that happened while driving, Furlong said.
The man was taken into custody on a charge of domestic battery second offense. The woman, who had the warrant, had a visible injury, including bruising and she complained of shortness of breath, Furlong said.

Silver Dollar Cruise Night

Thursday night the Carson Mall was filled with people, cars, good food and rock & roll music for the Silver Dollar Cruise Night. It was a blast. The event ran from 6 pm to 8 pm. There was no fee for spectators.
