Nevada Writers Hall of Fame: Gailmarie Pahmeier, Willy Vlautin and Tod Goldberg to be honored

This year, the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame will welcome Gailmarie Pahmeier, Reno’s first poet laureate, and Willy Vlautin, song writer and author of four highly-recognized novels. Tod Goldberg, author of the comedic crime novel “Gangsterland,” is the 2016 Silver Pen Recipient.

Beginning at 1 p.m., every student in the school hustled to the CHS big gym to prepare for and celebrate everything from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to the upcoming crowning of the 2016 Homecoming Queen and King.

Slower snowmelt affects agriculture, drinking water availability in western mountains

Co-Founder of non-profit organization biking across country to raise awareness about addiction, riding through Carson City

Two months later, he will arrive in Philadelphia. He is biking across the country to generate support for In The Saddle and raise awareness about the epidemic of addiction that America is currently facing.
Nevada Arts Council grants nearly $50,000 in new artist fellowships
Submitted by editor on Mon, 07/18/2016 - 5:08pmThe Nevada Arts Council has awarded nearly $50,000 in grants to 14 Nevada artists selected to receive FY17 Artist Fellowships, executive director Susan Boskoff announced today. From Las Vegas, Reno and Minden, their work includes music, poetry, choreography fiction and non-fiction. In addition, artist Stephan Caplan received a $6,955 grant in the Fellowship Project category for new work.
Donations sought for those displaced in Tuesday's Gardnerville fire

First Independent Bank Helping to Collect Barbie Dolls For Northern Nevada Foster Children

The doll collection effort is spearheaded by Hearts for Girls, a project group affiliated with Harvest Fellowship Church, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which started the campaign to help children in foster homes understand they are supported by the greater community. Organizers hope to collect 500 Barbie Dolls.

Jazz and Poetry take over Comma Coffee this evening; the Mile High Jazz Band can be found there every second Tuesday all year long. Get your fro-yo fix at Yogurt Beach and help raise funds for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser. A great panel of women will be at the Dayton Community Center this evening to share their experiences growing up on the Comstock.

Raise your glass to for a good cause: Suds for Seniors is raising money for the Meals on Wheels Program. A $15 ticket will get you a sample of five beers at the Feisty Goat Pub or at the Firkin and Fox. Might as well stick around the Firkin for karaoke and some yummy grub.

The International Film Weekend has returned for the third year and brings a bit of multiculturalism with it. Spend the afternoon in Marlette Hall at Western Nevada College to see what some local filmmakers have created, and then head over to the Community Center for tonight’s film ‘Cherry Blossoms.’ This is a free event and just gets bigger and better. Capital City Arts Initiative brings back it’s Nevada Neighbors Series with a talk by artist Zoe Bray inside the former BRIC building on East Proctor Street.
