Motorists use caution, deer roaming Carson City streets

UPDATE: A Carson Now reader sent us these photographs Thursday morning of a family of deer near East Third Street in Carson City. The reader noted that three of the four deer photographed appeared to have some injuries, likely from being hit by cars.

Outdoors with Don Q: Where to look for wildlife and birds and what to see

In our many wanderings in the Great Outdoors in the last few years, Elaine and I have encountered all kinds of wildlife and birds; and I thought that it might be fun to share some of those encounters in the hope that, you too, might also experience some unforgettable memories.

So, with that as a lead-in, here's where to look and what you might see, and don't forget to take your iPhones or digital cameras for photos:

Outdoors with Don Q: Wildlife in the area of the 'Quilici Cabin'

By way of background, the “Quilici Cabin” is located in a rural area of Plumas County at an elevation of exactly 6,000 feet on a steep hillside between Portola and Davis Lake in Northern California; and it is jointly owned by Jim, Kathi, Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City.

That two-story cabin was built back in 2003, and from our deck, you have a spectacular, world-class view of the surrounding groves of pine trees and quaking aspen trees plus the nearby and the faraway mountains.

DFG advises to leave young wildlife alone

By the California Department of Fish and Game
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) recommends that people not handle any young wild animals they see in the outdoors.

The improper handling of young wildlife is a problem in California and across the nation, most commonly in the spring, when many species are caring for their offspring.
People frequently encounter young wild animals they think need assistance or have been orphaned. However, in most cases neither assumption is true and the animals should be left alone.
