Carson City, Reno and Las Vegas had positive rates of job growth in June, according to a report Tuesday issued by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. The report highlights the effects of businesses reopening across Nevada after the statewide pandemic shut down over spring.

A Washoe County judge has ordered the state to start paying unemployment benefits to workers such as Uber drivers who have lost significant business but not entirely ceased operations, and to keep payments flowing unless the applicant stops filing claims, makes too much money or appears to be committing fraud.

Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine announced Monday the state’s short-term rental assistance program for Nevadans experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19 is now taking applications.

Those who have applied for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance who wish to make an appeal can now do so online, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

CARSON CITY — Federal and state law requires that the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation redetermine eligibility on a quarterly basis for regular unemployment, pandemic unemployment assistance, pandemic emergency unemployment compensation and state extended benefits.

CARSON CITY — Employment in Nevada is up 98,900 jobs over the month and the unemployment rate declined from 25.3 percent in May to 15 percent in June, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s June 2020 economic report.

Many high school seniors and current college students will have difficult decisions to make before entering or resuming their college education this fall.

The Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation was made aware of positive COVID-19 case in the Las Vegas unemployment insurance call center on Saturday, July 11.

Upon learning of the positive result, the call center was immediately closed and remediation efforts began as set forth by state and CDC protocols. The employee is self-quarantined, and there is no immediate exposure risk to the public as the facility has been closed to the public since mid-March.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 12,484 for the week ending July 4, up 1,374 claims, or 12.4 percent, compared to last week’s total of 11,110. This is the second consecutive week of increases in regular initial claims.

Through the week ending July 4, there have been 562,486 initial claims filed in 2020, 540,834 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Nevada is one of four additional states to receive approval from the U.S. Department of Education for its career and technical education plan submitted under the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act.

This is the fifth consecutive week of declines in regular initial claims. Through the week ending May 30, there have been 507,177 initial claims filed in 2020, 485,525 of which have come in the last twelve weeks.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced his COVID-19 swab test came back negative. The governor was tested Tuesday evening and learned of his results Wednesday.

In April, Carson City lost 3,800 jobs at a rate of 12.4 percent, giving the capital city an unemployment rate of 21.4 percent for the month compared to March’s rate of 7.1 percent and 4 percent in April 2019, according to figures released Wednesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

CARSON CITY — Independent contractors and gig workers eligible for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program can now begin filing weekly claims online, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation announced Saturday.

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) April 2020 economic report, employment in Nevada is down 244,800 jobs over the month and the unemployment rate rose to 28.2 percent.

This report is the first report which covers the period affected by the COVID-19 public health emergency and shows the impact of temporary business closures in the state.

The polarizing attitudes and ideology that has taken over the American political environment -- as witnessed in recently-held political debates and rallies, nationwide -- is a danger to traditional American democratic values of diversity and respect of the “marketplace of ideas”, where people are not listening to each other, where respect for diversity is lacking, where the prevailing political attitude seems to be “my way or the highway”.
