As the new year kicks off and another COVID-19 stimulus package has been passed, University of Nevada, Reno Extension will offer free online town halls and webinars next week and the following week to provide small businesses owners with details on the stimulus package, as well as guidance on marketing and taxes. Discussion on the new stimulus package will include improvements to the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program, as well as emergency enhancements being made to related lending programs.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) experienced a decrease in the amount of calls for service in Stateline for the New Year’s Eve celebration as compared to 2020.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

CARSON CITY — According to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 7,209 for the week ending December 26, down 589 claims, or 7.6%, compared to the previous week’s total of 7,798 claims.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded Wednesday afternoon to a crash involving two vehicles on Highway 50 East near the landfill turnoff at Flint Drive.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — As social restrictions continue in support of public health, risks associated with isolation permeate among the aging population. A three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously Tuesday in favor of a Lyon County church that argued Gov. Steve Sisolak's pandemic restrictions on places of worship were a violation of the First Amendment, reversing a lower court's ruling and prohibiting Sisolak from imposing further restrictions on churches.

For the week ending December 5, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,783, up 2,341 claims, or 36.3 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 6,442 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). This is only the second increase in regular initial claims activity since October 24. Through the week ending December 5, there have been a total of 783,384 initial claims filed in 2020, 761,732 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

KTVN will host its annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive this Friday, Dec. 11 with food drop-off locations in Carson City, Minden and Reno beginning at 6 a.m. and running until 6 p.m.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded Monday to a 2-vehicle crash in which two people fled the scene on foot.

Nevada is set to receive more than 164,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine throughout the month that will be used for hospital staff, skilled nursing facility staff and residents, and other Tier One individuals as outlined in the state's COVID-19 Vaccination Program Playbook, according to state health officials.

At 4:35 p.m. on Saturday a vehicle fire was reported near Centennial and Arrowhead.

Firefighters and first responders are currently enroute.

Motorists should avoid the area while emergency crews are on scene.

For the week ending November 28, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 6,442, down 1,679 claims, or 20.7 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 8,121 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

CARSON CITY — Hundreds of Nevada National Guardsmen will remain on duty through the first quarter of 2021, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Thursday.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

On the agenda for discussion includes an increase in water rates, the replacement of 32 city vehicles, water purchases and more.

CARSON CITY — For the week ending Nov. 21, initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 8,121, up 871 claims, or 12.1 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 7,243 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Through the week ending Nov. 21, there have been a total of 768,159 initial claims filed in 2020, 746,507 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

MINDEN — After consultation with the Douglas County Officials, the Towns, public safety agencies, and Douglas County Emergency Management it was determined in-person public holiday events at the Towns of Gardnerville, Genoa, and Minden, as well as the 25th Annual Parade of Lights hosted by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce have been cancelled.
