Nevada education board welcomes Jhone Ebert as new public instruction superintendent

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Board of Education on Monday welcomed Jhone Ebert, who was appointed by Gov. Steve Sisolak as the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Douglas County valley schools are operating on a 90-minute delay, according to the Douglas County School District web site, and the morning early childhood program is canceled for Carson Valley schools.

Nomination deadline extended to March 1 for Nevada Humanities Awards

Nevada Humanities extended the deadline to Friday, March 1, 2019 at 5 p.m. to nominate an exceptional individual or organization for the 2019 Nevada Humanities Awards.

These awards are for outstanding achievement in, and contributions to, the humanities. Biannually, Nevada Humanities presents five awards recognizing individuals and organizations that foster cultural enrichment and deepen our understanding of the human experience by facilitating opportunities for Nevadans to engage with the humanities.

Fritsch Elementary School in Carson City helped engage positive male role models this morning where more than 150 people attended “Supermen with Donuts.” The effort was designed to get dads, uncles, grandparents and father-figures more involved in school and childhood learning.

Vaccination clinics offered through October at Carson City schools

Carson City Health and Human Services is working with the Carson City School District to offer students annual seasonal flu vaccinations. There will be a team of CCHHS licensed nurses at each school to administer the flu vaccine. The vaccination is safe and a health action that benefits all age groups to protect against influenza illness.

Bobby Brooks Wilson enjoying ride of his life

As he entered an elevator, Bobby Brooks was thrilled to be headed to a special meeting. He had taken a new career path as an entertainer that led him to Atlantic City for a two-week run of shows. The legendary Four Tops were playing in the same Bally’s casino and had seen Brooks’ show. They were so intrigued they wanted to meet him.

“I came up there all excited saying, ‘I am going to get to meet the Four Tops!’ ” said Brooks, who was unaware of the motive of the two original Four Tops members.

That elevator led to the ride of a lifetime.

LeAnn Morris, Ph.D., lead technology integration specialist with the Carson City School District, recently earned the Certified Education Technology Leader designation by passing a rigorous certification exam. There are only four CETLs in the state of Nevada: two in the Carson City School District and two in the Washoe County School District.

Carson City School District honors Educator and Employees of the Year

Joanna Kaiser, 3rd grade teacher at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was honored Tuesday as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Early childhood obesity prevention website launched by Nevada Cooperative Extension

The percentage of obese children in Nevada is rising, and nearly one-third of children entering kindergarten are considered overweight or obese. To help teachers and parents teach healthy habits to children before age 5, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension recently launched the Healthy Kids Resource Center website.
