Submitted by Kelsey Penrose on Thu, 07/23/2020 - 9:32amEach year, the community gathers along the banks of the Truckee River to watch as hundreds of tiny yellow rubber ducks float across the water, and viewers cheer them on.
Adopt a Duck is one of the Nevada Humane Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year, and this year despite COVID-19, it will continue! However, instead of participants gathering on the banks, this year’s event will be live streamed from the Reno Shelter on August 29 at 12 p.m. and will consist of adorable shelter dogs and cats doing adorable activities.

Come join the men and women who help keep your city running daily with clean water, sewer service, streets, utility billing, the Jump Around Carson (JAC) bus system, landfill, city vehicle fleet maintenance, flood mitigation and storm drain services. Bring the whole family to a unique event, with tons of big construction equipment to see up close and climb on, a fun duck race, informative displays, lots of cool, free give-aways, and yummy eats from The Lazy Hog food truck.

The Nevada Humane Society’s annual Duck Race and Festival in downtown Reno raises funds for our area shelters and gives one lucky duck the chance to win a car. Splash Dogs at Heritage Park in Gardnerville has one last day of competitions for some talented pooches. Not real ducks, but little, bright yellow, rubber ducks. 30,000 of them to be exact. Recently, they descended upon Reno and are now completing Duckie Boot Camp as they train for the big day — when they race down the Truckee River to raise money and awareness for homeless pets at Nevada Humane Society.

Don’t miss out on a trip to Virginia City via the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train: locals get a discount on Sundays when they book online. Ormsby Post Acute Care is hosting a classic car show for their residents, so if you have an automobile that fits the bill, please head on over. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the home to Aviation Roundup Air Show this weekend. You won’t want to miss the USAF Thunderbird Flight Team. Also on some fierce wheels this Sunday are the Carson Victory Rollers. Our roller derby team is hosting a scrimmage and collecting donations of school supplies at the Community Center.

An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

Submitted by editor on Thu, 07/23/2015 - 12:55pmNevada Humane Society is issuing a big public thanks to Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota Scion for generously donating a 2015 Toyota Corolla as the grand prize for the annual Duck Race and Festival set for Sunday, August 23 in Reno.
On race day, 30,000 bright yellow rubber ducks will race down the Truckee River to raise money and awareness for homeless pets. The first duck — not necessarily the fastest duck — to reach the finish line and enter the official duck trap will be the grand prize winner and can walk away with the Toyota Corolla that night.
