Historian and author Mark McLaughlin will present his program “Reign of the Storm King” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, October 3, at 10 a.m.

Residents and travelers in the Sierra Nevada endure some of the most brutal winter storms in the world. Snowfall measured in feet, 180 M.P.H. wind gusts, and destructive avalanches. In 1890 extreme winter storms dumped 65 feet of snow and crushed railroad operations over Donner Pass.

Hello everyone and welcome back to a new year of Carson High School Senator news. While we took a break from this column this summer, we still had plenty of CHS students busy with school activities over the break. Thank you to the community for supporting students who participated in national competitions across the United States. The Senators were very well represented this summer.

Tom May and Chris Kennedy are scheduled to perform in Carson City, NV at The Brewery Arts Center performance hall, 511 West King St., Friday, July 25 at 7:30P p.m.

Tom May is a folksinger, songwriter and author who has been touring, performing, and recording for over forty years. He is also the host/producer of the radio show, “River City Folk,” heard on dozens of radio stations weekly since 1985 and on XM Satellite Radio throughout the country.

Ten Carson High School sophomores took home first place awards Saturday at the regional competition for National History Day at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Of the 15 entries from Nicole Fagundes’ Honors World History class, 12 received honors, including six first place entries that advance to the national competition at the University of Maryland at College Park in June.

Dr. William Collins, an internationally recognized scientist studying climate change and lead author on the Fourth Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, will be the keynote speaker at Operation Sierra Storm Meteorologist Conference, Jan. 8-11 at Stateline, Lake Tahoe.

Between June 7 and August 4 the Carson City Library engaged a record breaking 2,750 youth, ages 6 – 17, in signups for the 2013 summer reading program and attendance in summer learning activities. In that time, more than 21,788 items circulated from the library’s youth collection, primarily traditional books but also e-readers like Kindles, iPads, PlayAways and PlayAway Views.

(News Release) — In a lakewide study, a team of scientists lead by University of Nevada, Reno limnologist Sudeep Chandra has found a considerable decline in native fish species density at Lake Tahoe since 1951. In their final report, they are recommending establishing and implementing a management plan to protect the nearshore zone habitat, which is critical to native fish.

In the March 2011 issue of National Geographic, the University of Nevada, Reno researcher and assistant professor is pictured swimming with a man-eating catfish and describes swimming underwater with a 400-pound Mekong giant catfish in one of his many adventures in the rivers of a dozen countries around the world.
