Dinner Meeting

Heading into Tuesday, the capital city will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with events throughout the day. Other activities include a morning and evening walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a dinner fundraiser for the Roman family at Pizza Factory, a community dinner and meeting invite to the Order of Eastern Star, a showing at the BAC of the 1941 film classic "The Lady Eve" and a concert featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn at Shepherd-Sierra Lutheran Church. You are one of us! Esther Chapter No. 3, Order of the Eastern Star, is hosting a Feb. 4 dinner and open meeting for anyone in the community who might be interested in learning more about the Masonic Family in Carson City.

Our speaker for the Special Veteran’s Day celebration will be Captain Evan Morrison, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Fallon.

Club member and historian Kim Harris will help the Carson City Leisure Hour Club begin celebrating its 123-year history with a presentation at the Club’s first dinner meeting of the year on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Congressman Admodei will be our guest speaker at our upcoming dinner meeting to be held Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Carson Nugget.

Jan Whitemore, Executive Director of the Carson City Literacy Volunteers, will be the featured speaker at the Leisure Hour Club’s next dinner meeting on Wednesday, May 16. The Leisure Hour Club will also announce the donation of $500 to the Literacy Volunteers at the event in recognition of the organization’s outstanding work.

Carl Lackey, wildlife biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, will present information on the bears that inhabit Northern Nevada and what is done to protect them and the residents of the state at the Leisure Hour Club’s next dinner meeting on Wednesday, April 18.

Carson City Republican Women will hear high school senior applicants vie for a $2,000 scholarship at its next meeting on April 17 at the Casino Fandango.

Teri Vance is an award-winning journalist, storyteller and newspaper columnist. She will present her talk, Lessons Learned on the Back of a Camel: The Life of a Nevada Writer and Adventurer at the Leisure Hour Club’s dinner meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club begins the New Year with local author Brooke Santina, whose first novel "Dishrags to Dirtbags" tells the story of a meek housewife’s plunge into the often dangerous and mostly crazy world of law enforcement. The presentation will be at the Club’s dinner meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members will celebrate the holidays at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, December 20 with local entertainer, Hallie Kirk.

The Leisure Hour Club’s scholarship recipients and Western Nevada College will be the focus of the Club’s dinner meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Our speaker for the Special Veteran’s Day celebration will be Katherine (Kat) Miller, Colonel, USA retired, who is Director of the Nevada Department of Veterans Services.

Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will learn of the loves and losses of Julia Bulette, renowned resident of Virginia City, at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, October 18.

Bulette’s murder began a manhunt that last over a year and resulted in the arrest, trial, and the April 24, 1869 execution of John Millian.

In what was the largest gathering of people in Nevada up to that time, 3,000 to 4,000 people were present at the hanging.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club recently donated $500 to the Carson City Historical Society. Accepting the check for the Society were President Gary Cain along with members Paula Cannon, Dona Spencer, Debbie Lane and Gary Yoakum. The presentation occurred at the Club’s dinner meeting on April 19.

We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays. Our speaker will be Captain Robert T. Wiley, plankowner master of USNS Carson City, (T-EPF 7). Captain Wiley assumed this command on January 16, 2016 when the USNS Carson City was christened at Austal USA Shipyards in Mobile, Alabama.

Western Nevada College President Chet Burton and Niki Gladys, Executive Director of the WNC Foundation, will assist the Leisure Hour Club in recognizing this year’s recipients of three Leisure Hour Club Scholarships. In addition, President Burton will share insights into the college’s leadership role in providing higher education to the residents of Northern Nevada.

The Carson City Council is the local branch of the Navy League of the United States. We meet on quarterly basis, conducting a dinner meeting with informational speakers that talk about a wide range of topics and the Sea Services missions.

This quarter’s Dinner and meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City. The Social hour will start at 5:30 PM and Dinner will begin at 6:30PM.

This meeting’s guest speaker will be Captain Ted Powers, USMC. Capt. Powers is the Headquarters Company Commander at MCMWTC, Pickel Meadows, CA.

Luana Olsen, Director of the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, will be the featured speaker to the Leisure Hour Club as the Club opens its 121th year. She will explore the history of the Museum and share information on its current activities and workshops.

Recognizing the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society’s exemplary efforts to protect and restore the Nevada State Prison, a historic Nevada cultural and architectural treasure, the Leisure Hour Club of Carson City recently presented the group with a $500 donation in support of its efforts.

Former Director of the Nevada Department of Corrections and current Nevada State Prison Preservation Society President, Glen Whorton and Society Vice President Robin Bates will update the Leisure Hour Club membership on the current status of the historic Nevada State Prison located in Carson City. The presentation on the NHP to the Club will occur at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, May 18.

Members of the Leisure Hour Club will share in the gem and jewelry creation expertise of Tobin Rupert at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, March 16. Tobin, a member of the Washoe tribe, is a longtime resident of Carson City having grown up in Northern Nevada and receiving a Business Management degree from UNR. His gem and jewelry design business is located at 2800 S. Curry Street.
