Deer Run group adopts Carson City wild horses removed from BLM

A herd of wild horses removed from an area off of Deer Run Road last month were purchased Saturday at a Bureau of Land Management adoption in Carson City.

The BLM-sanctioned silent bid adoption was held at Silver Saddle Ranch. The horses were bought for $850 by the Deer Run Preservation Group in a collaborative effort with the American Wildhorse Preservation Campaign.

About 100 people attended the auction, many of whom were supporting the group and its efforts to save the horses.

RGJ Fact Checker: Was BLM justified in grabbing Carson City wild horses?

The Reno Gazette-Journal's Mark Robison, who authors the "Fact Checker" blog, looks into the claim that the Bureau of Land Management was justified in removing a family of wild horses off Deer Run Road near Carson City.

Earlier this year, Leon Thomas — the BLM’s new Sierra Front field manager — ordered the removal of 11 horses near Deer Run Road. Some were sent to a Colorado ranch; eight are up for auction Saturday. That much is agreed upon, nearly everything else is in dispute.

The horses are a part of the Pine Nut Mountains herd management area that is adjacent to Deer Run Road. Outdoor adventure: My first buck

Editor's Note: Pete Savini is 13-year-old. His parents are Rod and Tina Savini of Reno and his grandparents are Sal and Catali Quilici of Dayton. Pete writes about the first buck he was able to get while deer hunting in October 2012. This is his report.

On October 24, 2012 we headed out for my brother and mine’s deer hunt. We both had junior tags for the same area (my first deer tag). It was cold and snowy as we headed out. We got to our camping spot around 1:00 p.m. and got set up. Once camp was set up we headed out for the evening hunt.

Outdoors with Don Q: Two interesting days at a sport show

Elaine and I spent last Friday and Saturday manning an exhibit at the ninth annual Grand Slam Club OVIS Hunter and Outfitter Convention held at the Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino Hotel in Reno.

We were there to help Paul Dankowski, Game Warden and Operation Game Thief (OGT) Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

The two of us serve as State Directors on the OGT Citizen's Board, and had volunteered to man the OGT exhibit trailer for those two days.

The Annual Don Q Awards for many different reasons

As I have done for many years, my last article of the current year is to present the Annual Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons.

Those reasons include such assorted things as: Outstanding, memorable, good, not so good, questionable, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.

Those annual awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year. It’s a fun way to end the year for yours truly, so without further ado, here are my 2012 winners:

Outdoors with Don Q: Selected personal memories from the year 2012

As I look forward to the year of 2013 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2012.
Here are my top memories of this year:

Dog dodging Carson City traffic finally caught

This sweet old lady has been wandering on Highway 50 east and Arrowhead and Deer Run Road areas in Carson City since the the first week of November.

If you stopped to help her, she would bolt across all 4 lanes of traffic. It is a miracle she was not hit. Thanks to the efforts of many people, she was finally caught in a live trap.

Five Northern Nevada men convicted of Idaho poaching

Two Reno men and three Carson City men were among seven poachers who were issued citations and warnings in Idaho. According to Fox9 in Boise, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game issued 16 citations and five warnings to seven poachers from Nevada, Minnesota and the Idaho community of Harrison. Two elk and two deer were also seized.

Wardens arrest four in Lassen and Plumas counties

A citizen tip about deer poaching turned into a multi-agency operation resulting in the seizure of poached wildlife, drugs and stolen guns and cars.
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) operation, which included assistance from U.S. Forest Service officers, California Highway Patrol officers and Lassen County sheriff’s deputies, resulted in four arrests.
The operation began Oct. 21 when DFG wardens received confidential information from a citizen and responded to the home of Charles Roger Godkin, 44, of Chilcoot, to investigate suspected deer poaching.

Outdoors with Don Q: Wildlife in the area of the 'Quilici Cabin'

By way of background, the “Quilici Cabin” is located in a rural area of Plumas County at an elevation of exactly 6,000 feet on a steep hillside between Portola and Davis Lake in Northern California; and it is jointly owned by Jim, Kathi, Don and Elaine Quilici, all of Carson City.

That two-story cabin was built back in 2003, and from our deck, you have a spectacular, world-class view of the surrounding groves of pine trees and quaking aspen trees plus the nearby and the faraway mountains.

New Guzzler Atlas now available

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has gone back to the drawing board and completely redesigned the Water Development Atlas into an exceptional new tool for sportsmen and wildlife enthusiasts. The new Wildlife Water Development Atlas includes 160 full color, detailed map pages covering the entire State of Nevada. Each map page is drawn at 1:144,000 scale (one inch on the page is approximately equal to 2 ¼ miles on the ground), which means that each map now offers much more detail than any previous Water Development Atlas.
