Submarinin' at The Tea Party.
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 04/16/2010 - 10:05pmOn Tax Day it was my day off so I thought I'd go to the Tea Party in front of the Legislature to check out the scene. As a Progressive in my first Tea Party, I found it both exhiliarating and stomach turning. Despite my patchouli scented locks and my tie dyed hat, no one seemed to recognize me as "the enemy" so I browsed and schmoozed freely all over the area. Met 2 ex-coworkers there who were protesting with signs and I even got my picture taken with Govenor Gibbons! (I'll attach it here if I can.) He was real nice.

Tea Party Carson City: Smiles for now in an otherwise sea of venom, hostility at president
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 04/15/2010 - 11:57amWith veiled threats to the governors of Nevada and several other states last month by a far-right militia group, the amount of anti-government fervor may be boiling over nationally, but all is peaceful today in Carson City as more than a thousand have gathered at the Capitol to protest President Barack Obama, Sen. Harry Reid and health care.
Oh, and taxes. But there were far more anti-Obama and Harry Reid signs and a few Hitler ones than anything remotely about the IRS, today being the filing deadline for federal income taxes.
Peaceful but angry in Carson City

Snow's corny but lots of fun
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 04/14/2010 - 11:28amGee, I wish I could be up there on the hills, making a few turns and enjoying the weather and the snow. But modern medicine says no, two herniated disks in the back rule it out for the time being. Doc advises against skiing until the spine expert has an eyeful and decides what I can and can’t do for now.

A great double-play for skiers and hikers: Death Valley and Mammoth
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 04/13/2010 - 8:37pmWith so many of the mountain resorts staying open well into May there's a marvelous chance to combine skiing and hiking in one glorious wind-up of a great season.
I did this once and enjoy it immensely, hiking in the low and then turning around and skiing on the high. It was May of a couple of years ago when I loaded the car with camping gear and tucked a pair of skis on the roof rack. I headed south down 395, inflated with the idea of hiking around Death Valley National Park and then stopping off at Mammoth Mountain on the way home to ski.

Supervisor candidate forum wrap
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Tue, 04/13/2010 - 12:04amA few thoughts about tonight's supervisor candidate forum (you can get our live blog of the event here, and the Nevada Appeal version here):
• All candidates did well. There were no obvious gaffs. A lot of times, these forums expose those not-ready-for-prime-time candidates. Not this time. All spoke well and knew the issues.

Politics and Carson Now
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Sun, 04/11/2010 - 5:09pmSince a lot of people in Carson City know me from my political column that ran for four years in the Nevada Appeal, many asked if Carson Now would follow along the same philosophical slant.
The answer is no. But is Carson Now an "objective" news source? No way.
As someone who enjoys politics and has friends all over the political spectrum, I set out to make Carson Now open to all viewpoints. Anyone can sign up for an account and write whatever they want, subject only to keeping the content PG rated so as not to offend our younger viewers.

Ready to race up the hill at Squaw Valley?
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 04/05/2010 - 2:46pmIt's time for the skinny skier, skiers, snowshoers and fit bodies race up the mountain in the Annual Billy Dutton Uphill, in honor of late local luminary, Billy Dutton. The original “run what ya brung” race is an uphill answer to the famous ‘Chinese Downhill’ of the 70s. Starting from the bottom of KT-22, the course climbs 2,000 vertical feet over 3.2 miles to the finish at High Camp, at 8,200 feet.
It's enough to take your breath away just thinking about it.
The Billy Dutton Uphill race is open to Nordic skiers, snowshoers, runners and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

Senators blow away bad memories from day before
Submitted by on Fri, 04/02/2010 - 9:52pmRENO -- On a day when the wind was gusting up to 40 mph, coupled with occasional rain and snow flurries, Carson High softball coach Scott Vickrey knew better than to expect an ordinary game against Galena.
"I told the kids nothing would be routine today, and the team that puts the ball in play the most would walk out of here with a win," Vickrey said.
