The Common Core Way: civics lesson masquerading as mathematics
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 09/10/2014 - 7:59amA recent bruhaha over Common Core math was triggered by an examples from the THIRD grade, in Washoe county, in which a “math” lesson and a “math” problem was centered on full length study of the “Rights of Man” from the French revolution, “Universal Declaration on Human Rights,” and the children’s version, both from the UN. The only excuse for any math in this lengthy lesson was that at one point they asked how much it would cost to do a project to illustrate something in these documents.

Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 06/09/2014 - 5:52pmWhat is Common Core (CC) and why should you care?
Its proponents say CC is merely a set of standards for kindergarten through twelfth-grade education developed by disinterested and public-spirited experts at the request of the nation’s governors and state school superintendents.
Ron Knecht for State Controller in Nevada primary
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 06/02/2014 - 5:24pmTo the Editor: The Nevada primary elections are very close and I’d like to say a word about Ron Knecht.
Ron is running for the Office of State Controller. The Controller has a detailed and serious position: to ensure that the state’s funds are spent as intended and to audit the auditors.
I’ve known Ron for a number of years, and I’ve never seen anyone challenge his integrity or his character. Ron has been endorsed by the Nevada Republican Party, the Republican Assembly, the NRA and others.
Ron is against common core and stands for the tax payer. He is as conservative a man as I know.

Open Letter To Gov. Sandoval RE: Common Core
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 03/26/2014 - 3:20pmDear Governor,
There is no reason why YOU should feel any attachment to Common Core (CCSS). It was an "Every Child Left Behind" and a "Race To The Bottom" application, initiated by the former school chief and revised by the former Governor, which committed Nevada to adopt CCSS. The Legislature followed with bills in 2011 and 2013, none of which specified CCSS. It was the bureaucracy that chose to do that. The NRS, and bills such as AB288, only call for new standards and tests, without ever mentioning or unambiguously prescribing CCSS or SBAC.

Common Core -- The Legal Case Against It
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 11/29/2013 - 11:45amThe adoption and implementation of Common Core (CCSS) in Nevada is patently ILLEGAL. Everything they are doing, everything they have done, and the way they have gone about it is illegal.
On the Nevada side,
According to the NRS 389.520, the authority to determine what STANDARDS will be imposed on Nevada's schools is assigned to the Council To Establish Academic Standards.
NRS 389.520
1. The Council shall:
(a) Establish standards of content and performance, including, without limitation, a prescription of the resulting level of achievement
Rethinking Common Core... it is still a Huge Step DOWN
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 11/26/2013 - 8:12pmThe Common Core "State" Standards are a major change in the purpose, content and methodology of educating children from K through 12. According to some reports, not only are the college entrance exams being revised to be Common Core compliant, COLLEGES are also said to be considering adapting the change.
The question is, the change from WHAT?
The question is important because Common Core is either a step up, or just another step further down the road of the ever lower "progressive" standards that America has been experimenting with for over a hundred years.
Common Core - A Stab at the Heart of American Education
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 10/30/2013 - 7:04pmThey say 45 states have adopted the Common Core “State” Standards for grades K-12. If you have not heard about them yet, that’s because they rammed it through with the same “you have to pass it to find out what’s in it” arrogance that gave us obamacare. The two of them are pillars of the “fundamental transformation” that candidate Obama promised in 2008.
