USDA program Invests $987 million in rural Nevada loans since 2009

Since 2009, the rural agency has provided more than $987 million to strengthen rural Nevada’s families and communities.

The sale is a project of the Carson City/Storey County Leaders Council. All sale proceeds benefit the council’s scholarship fund.

Free public fire wood gathering at Wrights Lake Recreation Area
Submitted by editor on Mon, 10/20/2014 - 5:38pmPLACERVILLE, CA – The Wrights Lake Recreation Area on the Eldorado National Forest will be open to free public fire wood gathering Oct. 25-26, 2014 and Nov. 1-2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Portions of the recreation area will be open to the public for woodcutting on both weekends and woodcutters will be issued a free permit on site.
“The Forest Service is looking forward to a safe and successful wood cutting event. Please help us clean up this popular recreation area,” stated Richard Thornburgh, Pacific Ranger District Ranger.
Tahoe South tunes up for winter with epic $100 million resort-to-recreation renaissance

The resort-to-recreation renaissance includes the planned winter opening of the $60 million remodel of Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, $24 million remodel of MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, $3 million at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel and $15 million for the Château shopping center across from Heavenly Village.

It’s Hunting Season! Yesterday there were 13 deer in my yard. Do you know what that means? It’s hunting season. Here in Northern Nevada we have five seasons, the normal four plus a special one; when an outdoor workout means climbing hills in search of four footed animals with “racks.”
Lake Tahoe boat inspections return to launch ramps for fall and winter
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/25/2014 - 4:28pmBeginning Oct. 1, boat inspections at Lake Tahoe will move to select launch ramps and winter hours will begin. Tahoe RCD inspectors will be stationed at the Cave Rock boat launch from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, weather permitting.
No inspector will be stationed at Lake Forest boat launch from Sept. 8 through Jan. 2, 2015 due to a rehabilitation project. Inspections will be available at Lake Forest once the project is complete. Please call the hotline for availability of alternative inspection options.

Carson City picked by EPA for green improvements along William Street

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will provide technical assistance to Carson City through the Greening America's Capitals program, which helps cities to develop environmentally-friendly infrastructure that will contribute to greener, more vibrant neighborhoods and increase resiliency from the impacts of climate change.
Storey County biofuel company gets $70 million DOD grant
Submitted by editor on Fri, 09/19/2014 - 9:23amFulcrum BioEnergy’s Sierra BioFuels Plant that is being built in Storey County received a $70 million grant boost from the Department of Defense’s Advanced Drop-in Biofuels Production Project, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Friday.
The grant award follows the Sept. 4 announcement by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the National Clean Energy Summit that the Department of Agriculture had finalized a $105 million loan guarantee for the Sierra BioFuels plant.

Weather Service: Smoke to get worse through Thursday

Southwest winds will keep the smoke area in the general same area through Wednesday. Winds will turn more westerly behind a cold front on Thursday and push smoke more into western Nevada.
NDOW seeks to hire 7 new game wardens for mostly rural duty stations

“The agency has experienced several retirements and some turnover in the last few years,” said Tyler Turnipseed, Chief Game Warden at NDOW.

New gateway signs mark Nevada entrances to Lake Tahoe watershed

Installed near Daggett Summit on Nevada State Route 207, Spooner Summit on U.S. Highway 50 and on Nevada State Route 431 the Mount Rose Highway, the decorative gateway signs read, “Entering the Lake Tahoe Watershed — Help Protect It!”

WNC's fifth solar array takes nonprofit installer Black Rock Solar over 5 MW mark
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 08/11/2014 - 12:58amWith the August completion of a 180-kW rooftop array at Western Nevada College in Carson City, nonprofit Black Rock Solar has reached the milestone of building five megawatts of solar power capacity across the state of Nevada. The 83 clean energy projects built by Black Rock Solar since its 2007 founding include arrays for schools, hospitals, food banks, homeless shelters and Native American tribes. These arrays have been built at little or no cost to the recipients, but now provide more than $725,000 of combined savings annually on the organizations’ energy bills.
