College Baseball: WNC takes region championship

There are few teams that can compete with one that allows just a single run in three tournament games. Western Nevada College pitchers completed a dominant Region 18 baseball tournament performance with a 6-0 championship victory against College of Southern Nevada on Saturday in Henderson.

“Our guys were ready to play,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore. “They earned it. They grinded it out all year, and they kept believing in one another and themselves.’

Wildcats’ right-hander Philip Belding tossed a four-hit gem to provide WNC with its third straight complete-game pitching effort.

A day after NBA basketball player Jason Collins came out as gay to Sports Illustrated, a former NFL coach and an Oakland Raider record-setting placekicker believe the NFL is ready to accept a gay football player.

"I don't think the NFL is going to have a problem," said Herm Edwards, former Kansas City Chiefs head coach, now an NFL analyst for ESPN. "Is there going to be a vote of confidence in the locker room? For some of the younger and immature players, but the veteran players — they get it."

Carson High School Bowling Looks To Get Back To Championship Form

The Carson High School Bowling Team fell off of its pedestal last year for the first time in 12 years. The team, which have been champions every year since its inception in 2000-2001, lost by one pin to the Reed High School Bowling Team in early 2012.

Now, coaches Vern Barnes, Kevin Costa, and David Lethcoe are looking to get the team back up on that championship track. The Carson team has a great mixture of veterans and new faces on the roster to steer this team back into the winners circle.

Fernley 95A Speedway Race Results for September 15, 2012

It was the final points race of the season, a night that would see champions crowned in six racing divisions at Fernley 95A Speedway. Over 70 cars were on hand, and there were lots of spectators in the stands rooting for their favorite driver.

2012 Forensic Medicine Reserve Champions - HOSA National Leadership Conference

Smith Valley High School Health Science students Sierra Hunewill and Mikayla DeBusk competed in Orlando, Florida June 21 at the National HOSA Leadership Conference. They traveled with over 125 students from Nevada to compete in health science related academic events. The two girls won the Forensic Science competition at state this year so therefore qualified for nationals. They had to make it to the second round in Florida by being in the top 20 with almost 200 competitors. They then went on to solve a crime scene and to determine the cause and time of death.

Three Nevada teams Compete at 2012 World Robotics Championship

Aces finish regular season on winning note by beating Padres 12-8

RENO- An offensive shootout in Aces Ballpark to finish the season was the treat for fans on 'Fan Appreciation Day'.

The Aces' starter Tom Layne (9-7, 6.22 ERA) went 6 innings giving up 5 runs, 8 hits, no walks, with 2 strikeouts and was rewarded with his tenth victory on the year.

The Padres starter Samuel Deduno (4-5, 3.94 ERA) was taken out in the thrid inning due to injury, but not before he gave up 5 runs on 4 hits with two walks and 2 strikouts. Deduno would be handed the loss.

PLAYOFF BOUND!: Reno Aces defeat Fresno Grizzlies 5-2

RENO- Aces are one win away from punching their first ticket ever into the Pacific Coast League Playoffs. The Fresno Grizzlies come into town for a four game series. With Reno having a seven game lead over second place Tacoma and only eight games left to play, the Aces have all but wrapped up their spot in the playoffs. All it would take is an Aces win or a Tacoma loss.

Well, it happened, the Aces beat the Grizzles 5-2 on Monday night for their first ever playoff berth.

Lake Tahoe kicks off first stages of Amgen Tour of California

Organizers of the the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in North America, announced today the Stage 1 and Stage 2 race routes for Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race as the official Overall Start is Sunday, May 15 and begins at South Lake Tahoe at 6,300 feet, the highest start elevation in the six-year history of the competition. Stage 1 wraps up in North Lake Tahoe at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, with the Stage 2 Start taking place nearby at Squaw Valley USA on Monday, May 16.

Lake Tahoe selected as start for 2011 Amgen Tour of California

LAKE TAHOE — The 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in America, will start at Lake Tahoe, officials announced today.

Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race will feature more than a lap and a half around the Lake beginning at the California/Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe with the Stage 1 finish at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort in North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe also hosts the Stage 2 start at Squaw Valley USA, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Nugget Project tidbits

There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

Nugget Project update: a look at the Meridian report

Last week we reported that the governor's office sent a letter to Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis taking issue with certain parts of the feasibility study for moving three state agencies into the Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

The one big item missing in that story was the Meridian Business Advisors feasibility study itself, which we now have a copy of.
