When the Flocchini family, owners of Sierra Meat and Seafood Company in Reno, purchased The Sausage Factory last May from long-time owner Joe Tonino, they sought to build upon an already good product.

The only thing that changed at the time was the name. And, as it turns out, not much else has changed since.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers received training this week on basic school enforcement.  In July the SRO staff will travel to receive advanced certification in time for the 2016-2017 school years.

William Dakota Gershel and Timothy Ibarra, both seniors at Carson High School, have participated in Career and Technical Education programs since attending CHS as freshman. Ibarra participated in two years of auto technician courses and two years in auto body courses. Gershel experimented in a variety of CTE courses including culinary, web design and welding.

Carson High School students will soon register for next year’s classes and will now have a new choice in the schedule as CHS’s Career and Technical Education program begins offering a new manufacturing technologies course of study in the 2016-2017 school year.

Western Nevada College’s Nursing Department will host a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Open House this Friday, March 4, from 1-5 p.m. The event is free to the public. Visitors will learn about training and employment opportunities for CNAs. The Open House will be in the Cedar Building, Rm. 100-Marlette Hall on the Carson City campus, 2201 W. College Parkway.

A 46-acre industrial site on Arrowhead Drive near the Carson City Airport has been approved as the first property to be designated a Nevada Certified Site, the Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Wednesday.

The Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Wednesday the launch of a new program that is designed to shorten the amount of time it takes for a company to acquire or build a new facility.

The Nevada Certified Site Program as part of their continuing effort to attract more businesses to the Silver State. The program is aimed to provide critical decision making information to business owners and site selectors to allow informed decisions, said NNDA Executive Director Robert Hooper.

As more manufacturing businesses have moved to Northern Nevada, including Tesla in Storey County, Kayla Homme, 22, adjusted her career focus.

“I saw that opportunity,” she said. “I think it’s something like 70 percent men, so I figured as a woman I’d have a better chance.”

The Career & Technical Education division at WNC offers a Bachelor of Technology degree, Associate of Applied Science degrees, certificates of achievement, and preparation for industry certification and licensing.

The first official day of fall has come and went. Days are shorter and temperatures are cooler. Talk of a “Monster El Niño” has everyone stoked for winter. Northern Nevada’s new manufacturing growth requires employees with more skills in applied technologies. Western Nevada College offers a new credential this fall that will help area residents meet their job goals. Courses beginning Monday, August 31, can lead to a Manufacturing Technician 1 credential.

Among the topics featured this week, Bloomer and Loyd discuss Nevada's Working Capital program made possible through a Library Services Technology Act grant, in which the library is working with Western Nevada College and the Carson City School District to offer training and certification for manufacturing jobs.

Train buffs and dignitaries gathered at the Nevada Rail Road Museum under rainy skies, Saturday for the unveiling of the Glenbrook, a historic locomotive that once hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe sawmills to Spooner Summit.

“Nowhere else can you see an event like this,” said Peter Barton, Administrator of the Division of Museums and History. “We’ve done research before we started restoring, we spent months with historians and researchers. The locomotive has been painstakingly restored, no where else can you find a locomotive that has had so much time spent working on it.”

After five years as the deputy director of the library and a lifetime in Carson City, Tammy Westergard is leaving for Oregon to take over as the director of the Jackson County Library District. She will begin the job June 1, overseeing 15 libraries that serve about 200,000 patrons.

By 1943, it was saved from scrap and donated by the Bliss Family to the Nevada State Museum, where it pleased countless youngsters who crawled all over it outside the museum’s doors on Carson Street for four decades. Restored by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it is under steam again.

The newly renovated Farmers Bank building, located at 1597 Esmeralda Ave., in Minden will be open to the public from 3-6pm on Tuesday May 12, 2015. Tours of the building will be given in small groups so that people can ask questions and learn about the unique features of the building.

Miles Construction has hired mechanical engineer Jeff Rowan to add to their team of project managers. With more than 28 years of experience in the processing and construction industries, Rowan will be leading Miles’ more complex industrial projects.

Rowan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. He holds an ISO 9000 certification, considered the highest standard for quality management in the industry.

Douglas County Dispatch recently achieved their accreditation for Emergency Medical Dispatch from the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch. The International Academy is the world’s largest leading standard-setting and certification body for emergency dispatch.

Douglas County 9-1-1 is the first all-risk center in the State of Nevada to achieve accreditation for medical dispatch. The IAED only recognizes the best of the best in the accreditation process. This accreditation means the center adheres to set policies and procedures and quality assurance protocols.

Children interested in playing AYSO soccer in Carson City will be able to do so this year at the lowest ever registration cost. Participants this year will pay $25 compared to the $75 registration fee last year, said Molly Walt, regional commissioner for the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region No. 140.

“AYSO is a quality recreational soccer program,” Walt said. “We want to continue to make it affordable.”
The discount was made possible, she said, through the program’s annual fundraiser tournament, the Comstock Shootout.
