Congratulations to the 18 Arrowhead 4-H Livestock members who participated in the 2016 Nevada Junior Livestock Show last month at the Reno Livestock Events Center. Club members raised and participated in classes in beef, goat, sheep, swine, dairy, quiz bowl and herdsmanship.

All members were required to take classes and be current in their Quality Assurance tests prior to showing in their species. Several members in the club raised and showed 2 species for the 2016 show year. See the list of ribbon and place winners below:

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.

When the Flocchini family, owners of Sierra Meat and Seafood Company in Reno, purchased The Sausage Factory last May from long-time owner Joe Tonino, they sought to build upon an already good product.

The only thing that changed at the time was the name. And, as it turns out, not much else has changed since.

Two wild horses were killed by motorists early Thursday on Highway 50 near Dayton, according to the Nevada Department of Agriculture. One motorist suffered minor injuries when he struck a wild horse, sending it through the windshield, killing the animal on impact.

The annual Eagles and Agriculture event kicks off this week in the Carson Valley, a wildlife viewing exhibition that attracts hundreds of visitors to the area to see birds of prey feeding and nesting below the eastern slopes of the Carson Range.

But Carson City residents don't have to leave the Eagle Valley to catch glimpses of raptors. We've got them in our own backyards.

Nevada agriculture officials are urging motorists to use "extreme caution" while driving following two crashes this week involving horses north of Carson City. On Friday morning, a motorist was taken to the hospital after a collision with a feral horse in the northbound lane of Old Highway 395 at Rawhide near Pagni Lane.

The highly anticipated Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe broke ground Thursday in a ceremony highlighting the major impacts it will make on South Shore's economic and community revitalization, as well as important environmental and recreational enhancements in the area.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will enhance traffic safety with a new project that began Monday by installing livestock fencing on sections of Highway 50 in Silver Springs.

The project will fence approximately four and a half miles of U.S. 50 between Boyer Lane and Pinto Street and from Onyx Street to the U.S. 95 Alternate intersection in Silver Springs. The four-strand, smooth wire fencing will stand four feet high to help prevent wild horses and cattle from entering the highway.

Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group will demonstrate cooking with Dutch ovens in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 22, at 10:00 am.

Congressman Mark Amodei, NV-2, voted Thursday in favor of legislation known as Trade Promotion Authority, which would set parameters and restrictions on the negotiations of a free trade agreement known as the Trans Pacific Partnership and provide for an up or down vote on the resulting agreement. It passed the House 218 to 208.

The TPA bill has been available to the public online for more than a month. Amodei released the following statement:

Evelyn Dorothy Bird, a native Nevadan, passed from this life on June 4, 2015. She was born February 21, 1921, to German immigrant parents on their Carson City ranch. Evelyn married Jack Graham Bird Sr. in 1938. Together they raised cattle, turkeys, and bummer lambs on what is now known as the Silver Saddle Ranch. They also raised six children. Evelyn was a loving mother, homemaker and avid gardener.

Dianne and Lee Hutchens of Central Nevada took the plunge into solar energy using USDA Rural Development's Rural Energy for America grant, and are glad they did. This winter, they have been earning credits from NV Energy; in April they will begin using the credits to power two circle pivots on 160 acres of irrigated pasture.

The following statement taken from the Carson High School website: On Jan. 1, 2015 a new state law takes effect for student drivers under the age of 18. Students looking forward to the privilege of driving in the State of Nevada are expected to attend school at least 90 percent of the time and not be considered a “Habitual Truant.”

The Lompa Ranch has a long history in Carson City. It's a large ranch and fine open area for this (now) much more urbanized area, and the ranch extends all the north to the rear of the Gold Dust West on Highway 50.

Never before has such a grand combination of iconic ranch, lakefront and forestland been offered for sale at once in Lake Tahoe’s rich history. This rare offering includes: historic Shakespeare Ranch with 133 acres of lakefront ranchland; Squaw Valley Homestead, arguably the most coveted landholding in Squaw Valley; and High Canyon Ranch, encompassing 321 acres of one of the last remaining privately owned large acreage parcels in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Concerned about the recent uptick in wild horses in and around the Virginia Range south of Reno, state agriculture officials say they want the horses to remain in the wild as long as they aren't presenting a public risk. If there are problems, officials say they will gather the horses for adoption.

In a released statement, the Nevada Department of Agriculture says it receives complaints almost daily about horses in neighborhoods in and around the Virginia Range.

Just south of Silver Springs is Buckland’s Station, an old two story house built in 1870 by Samuel Buckland from the dismantled materials from Fort Churchill. This site was once a Pony Express stop, supply center for early pioneers and nearby Fort Churchill, and a former hotel. Today it’s a quiet old building in a park setting under the cottonwoods along the Carson River. I had a free afternoon recently, and decided to make the station my trailhead for an exploration loop around the mountains.

Battle Mountain BLM District Manager Doug Furtado’s order of July 23 that ranchers remove their cattle from Mount Lewis has spurred the ranchers and their supporters to carry their fight to remove Furtado from office to Washington, D.C., via the Grass March and Cowboy Express.

The NV 150 Fair at the Fuji Park Fairgrounds is just three weeks away. Those who shop in that area will have noticed that Fuji Park is undergoing quite the change with additional parking, grading, electrical upgrades and more to get ready for Carson City’s first fair.

RENO — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has agreed to let ranchers continue grazing cattle and sheep on more than 300 square miles of Northern Nevada rangeland as long as lingering drought conditions don’t worsen.
