Battleborn Harley on Research Way is hosting one heck of a Street Vibrations party: live music, demos, and vendors galore. Swing a club for the Western Nevada College Foundation at Silver Oak Golf Course. Southbound Train arrives at Living the Good Life for an outdoor show, followed by a night of dancing. Uncle Funkle is always a fun time: find them at the Carson Nugget this weekend.

It’s back to school and back to work after a long weekend, but don’t let the day feel like a Monday. Join the Classic Cinema Club for Whistle Stop, a love triangle starring Ava Gardner. Bring something for the ducks if you join in the Easy Walk at Ross Gold Park. Five years ago, our community suffered a great shock when four people, including three National Guardsmen, were the victims of a shooting attack at IHOP. The annual remembrance run begins at 7 a.m., so please be cautious when driving along Fairview this morning.

TUESDAY:

Labor Day weekend is almost upon us, signaling the unofficial end of summer. It’s still nice outside, so enjoy an easy hike up Lakeview's Hobart Road with Muscle Powered. WNC students are treated to a back-to-school BBQ with a bounce house and rock climbing wall. Kids won’t want to miss Lego Club at the Carson City Library this afternoon. Guitarist Dave Leather entertains at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Head to Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or Living the Good Life for karaoke.

THURSDAY:

It's the last day of August. Scarves, sweaters, and pumpkin everything are just around the corner. Enjoy today with some country line dancing at Carson Lanes or the trivia pub quiz at Westside Pour House. Matt Theilen opens his photography exhibit at WNC today; the reception begins at 4:30 p.m. Head to Sparks today if you want to beat the weekend crowds at the Best in the West Rib Cook-off. Josh and Jenera of the Whitehats are holding an open mic jam at Firkin and Fox; bring your guitar, or just enjoy the music on the patio.

WEDNESDAY:

Where has the time gone? We are moments away from Labor Day weekend with its Best of the West Rib Cook-off, monthly Downtown Wine Walk, Fallon Cantaloupe Festival, and Virginia City’s Civil War Days. Enjoy a walk in the Ronald D. Wilson Memorial Park, just west of Emerson Drive. Canyon White, the award-winning singer-songwriter, can be found at her weekly gig at Living the Good Life joined by Keith Alan Barnett. Dance it up: swing at El Charro, country line dance at Carson Lanes, or square dancing in Genoa are on the table.

Welcome back, Wildcats. Western Nevada College kicks off a week of festivities at today with some free donuts and pizza. Those not headed back to school might be headed back to the Playa: Burning Man has begun, so keep your eyes peeled for some crazy looking cars on the road. A new exhibit featuring local high school artists can be found downtown in the Community Development building next to City Hall.

The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. Back to school week is just about behind us, so do something to celebrate your survival. Southbound Train hits the outdoor stage at Living the Good Life, followed by hours of dancing with DJ Bobby. Cowboy Bobby will get your boots on the floor with Country Dance Night at Carson Lanes. Take the kids to Minden Park for the final family concert in their GE Series: Foreigner Unauthorized begins at 6 p.m. Shine up the chrome for the Carson SYFL Car Show at Bully’s Sports Bar, and catch some NFL pre-season while you’re there. Streets and sidewalks around Carson City will be busier starting Monday morning as children throughout the district head back to school.

Carson kids have one last week to lay about, while their neighbors in Douglas and Lyon County are headed back to school. Jazz and Beyond continues with some fun times downtown. Me and Bobby McGee will appear in the Comma Courtyard, followed by the Rosebud Dance Band in the McFadden Plaza. Head to the Carson City Library to meet the Heroes of the Carson City Fire Department as part of the ongoing series, ‘What’s up in your community?’ Keep reading for all of Monday’s options.

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival returns to King Beach for the weekend. The Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has infiltrated the whole valley with musicians. In this week's edition of It's Your City, host Cortney Bloomer talks with Sheila Story, Carson City School District's head nurse. The two discuss vaccination requirements for back to school, which starts Aug. 22.

Just a few more weeks until the kids head back to school, so get out and enjoy the summer while you can. Jazz and Beyond brings a free outdoor concert to the Minnesota Street Stage at the Brewery Arts Center this evening. It’s the Carson Dreamers tonight, but you can go HERE for all of the upcoming music festival events. The Nevada Arts Council welcomes Justin Favela’s new exhibit to their OXS Gallery with a reception and talk by the artist.

Silver State Online High School in Carson City has turned school into a party! Its back to school enrollment drive on August 13th from 11AM-1PM features an atrium barbecue complete with all the fixings, drinks,and desserts. FREE drawings will be held throughout the event. Eligible winners include all families that enroll one or more new students at the event.

It’s not surprising that middle school students are often more fluent in technology than their parents. But now, due to state grant money allocated to Carson and Eagle Valley middle schools, that technological know-how will be guided toward digital education and job readiness as students advance toward graduation.

Funeral services will be held May 6 in Carson City for Ruth Aberasturi, a lifelong advocate for children with disabilities who served as director of special education with the Carson City School District for more than 30 years. She died April 20, 2016. Aberasturi was 85.

Monday has returned, the kids head back to school, and the weather is gorgeous. Add a dose of beautiful to your day with a visit to an art Gallery. You’ll find a new exhibit in the Main Gallery at Western Nevada College. Carson City officials will be on hand today at the Community Center to answer questions and explain what is on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. While you’re there, take a good gander at the Great Basin Native Artists show on display in the Sierra Room.

MONDAY:

From boom to bust, life in Virginia City during its heyday inspired many dreams of finding fortunes in the ground but also the reality of living in a tough mining town.

It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. Kids will want to head to the Community Center for the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot. The best shooters in the state will advance to the national competition in Chicago for a chance at scholarship money.

Carson City has some great options tonight: live music at Living the Good Life and Glen Eagles, country dance at Carson Lanes, or Geeks who Drink Trivia at Lake Tahoe Brewery. For the more culturally minded, don’t miss the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus 9/11 Memorial Concert with Guest Artist Elizabeth Pitcairn at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Capital City Arts Initiative is proud to present Nicole Nathan, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon. Nathan will give an illustrated talk on the role of craft and design in contemporary culture, titled ‘Craft Now’, as part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors Series.

Ready, set, GO! Whether you want to watch camels race, or hot air balloons light up the sky, this is a great weekend in Northern Nevada. If cool cars are more your style, join the Freaks of Nature Car Club at a show and shine in the parking lot of Yogurt Beach in North Carson. It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

Labor Day weekend always seems bittersweet. Sure, it’s a three day weekend and a great time to bar-be-que, camp, or enjoy friends and family. It also marks the end of the summer. Everyone has gone back to school, and the autumn crisp is beginning to sneak in. No matter where you roam this weekend: north, south, east, or west there is fun to be had. Or stick around town and enjoy the many things that make Carson City unique.

If you need to brush up on your line dancing skills, Beercade is the place to go for free lessons. It takes two to tango, but you don’t need a partner to learn to salsa at El Charro Avita tonight. If you’re more song and less dance, you can choose from Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or the Feisty Goat Pub for karaoke. Fandango kicks off a month of Throwback Thursdays tonight with crooner Rick Radecki singing hits from yesteryear.

Hungry? The Best in the West Rib Cook-off starts today in Sparks’ Victorian Square. It continues until Monday, so there is plenty of time to get your fill of bar-be-que. Explore the World at the Carson City Library tonight. Valarie Wilson gives a presentation on her time as a student at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. Step into the past with Wild Bill Hickock and Buffalo Bill Cody at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. Enjoy the new art exhibit at Comma Coffee; ‘See the World Through My Eyes’ by Linda Arnn Arteno is the feature of tonight’s artist reception.

September has arrived, and with it a hint of autumn to come. The nights are starting to get chilly, so sweaters, scarves, and pumpkin everything are on the way. Crisp fall evenings are perfect for movie watching. Develop a love of old movies with the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. They meet tonight at Red’s Old 395 and will be watching noir classic ‘Suddenly’ with Frank Sinatra. Or kick up your heels and head to Carson Lanes for some line dancing.

The K-12 kids have had a few weeks to get back in the swing of things. Now it’s your turn, Western Nevada College students. The new semester starts today and WNC has plenty of ways to welcome you back. Don’t miss the new exhibit in the WNC Main Gallery: Victor Sandblom’s ‘Wind on the Sea, Tracks in the Sand.’ Let off some Monday night steam with karaoke at the Firkin and Fox. Or head to El Charro Avita and party it up with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

MONDAY:

Are you off to the playa? If not, head over to the Carson City Airport for their display of vintage aircraft celebrating the end of WWII. If land-based vehicles are your passion, then the Ferrari Hill Climb along the truck route to Virginia City could be for you. If the Ferraris are too fast, maybe you’d enjoy watching or racing with Carson City BMX at the Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds Street. For something without wheels, consider the weekly pool tournament at Remedy’s on William Street.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

The end of August already: how did that happen? This summer seems to have flown by. I guess that’s what happens when you’re having fun. Those of you gearing up for Burning Man have just a few last days to prepare for the playa. And those headed to Western Nevada College have this one last weekend before it’s time to hit the books.
