Events around Carson City for Thursday, Dec. 5

The days keep moving along, ever closer to the weekend and huge helpings of Christmas holiday activities. Thursday events around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a meeting with the developer of the proposed Andersen Ranch, a presentation: "Feathers and Furs of the Carson Valley" at the River Fork Ranch, an "End to Prohibition Party" at Gather restaurant, and more.

Here's what's happening Thursday:

— Carson City Board of Supervisors to discuss Butti Way affordable housing proposal and more. 8:30 a.m. The Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Dec. 5 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street. On the docket for discussion is the sale of property to Carson Tahoe Regional Health Care, development of affordable, workforce housing near Butti Way, purchasing a new radio dispatch console system and public safety audio equipment and more.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Saludos Amigos. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Saludos Amigos", by artist Justin Favela at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The exhibition will be in the gallery from now through January 29, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday. In this installation, Favela will collage imagery from famous animated films that depict Latin American culture. Using his signature "piñata style" Favela will make large scale murals with tissue paper and glue that will break down images from films like “The Three Caballeros”, “The Emperor's New Groove” and “Coco.” These films celebrate Latin American culture but through the investigation of the imagery, Favela will highlight the exoticism and Hollywood fantasy that falsely represents an entire culture. Favela, a Las Vegas native, makes work in a piñata style exploring his identity as a Latino from Las Vegas with Mexican and Guatemalan parents. He makes his work with traditional craft materials like tissue paper and cardboard, making anything from sculptures to large scale paper installations.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Constellation. 8 a.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, Constellation. Nine students from the University of Nevada Reno’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through Dec. 10, 2019 on Mondays – Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The artists include Rachael Blizzard, Tessa Clawson, Josh Galarza, Robert Ibarra, Sandra Kramp, Carla Miller, Cesar Piedra, Shara Sinatra, and Amber Skilling. — Healing Qigong Part 1: A 6 week Qigong series offered at Carson City Yoga. Offered Thursdays through Dec. 19 by instructor Deborah Stevenson at Carson City Yoga. This relaxing, six-week qigong series promotes balance and renewal, perfect for this holiday season. Healing Qigong Part 1 consists of ten easy movements with an emphasis on gathering “chi” from the universe and learning how to move energy throughout the body. The movements will be broken down step by step and each class in the series will build upon the previous one. Classes are Thursdays, 9:30 to 11 a.m. through Dec. 19. — Nevada Day art exhibit at Nevada Artists Association gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. The annual Nevada Day Art Exhibit at the Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery will be held from through January 3, 2020. The NAA Gallery is located at the Brewery Art Center at 449 West King Street. The NAA gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

— Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. 11:30 to 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.

— Modern Western Square Dancing. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Square dancing is a dance for four couples (eight dancers in total) arranged in a square. It is a very social and fun way to dance. Instruction will be provided. Come by yourself or with a group of friends. The more the merrier! The class runs for 10 weeks. You can come to all or purchase a 5 class punch card. — Muscle Powered Thursday Hike at Prison Hill. 3 p.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at www.musclepowered.org/calendar. December 5 - Prison Hill, Clearview- meet at the east end of Clearview Drive.
Thursday hikes start at 3:00 PM and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. — LEGO Club at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop St., Carson City.

— Developer of proposed Andersen Ranch Estates in Carson City to hold neighborhood meeting. 5 p.m. Christy Corporation, Ltd. will host an informal neighborhood meeting to present a proposed development plan for Andersen Ranch Estates, which includes the 48.2 acres located west of Mountain Street, east of Ormsby Boulevard in west Carson City. Project representatives will be on hand to present plans for a Tentative Subdivision Map and answer questions. The meeting will be held Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street, Carson City. The Planning Division has received a Tentative Subdivision Map application for a portion of the Andersen Ranch property (between Ormsby Blvd. and Mountain St.) that was formerly the subject of the “Vintage” subdivision project. The application will be scheduled for a public hearing at the Planning Commission meeting of Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019. The plan submitted in July for the new subdivision allows for 111 lots with a minimum of 5,000 square feet, and 93 larger lots between 7,700 square feet and 13,569 square feet. A total of 7.58 acres of open space and 9.64 acres of right of way is also included in the plans.

— Feathers and Furs of the Carson Valley: a program about the wildlife of western Nevada. 5 p.m. Join local outdoor and birding enthusiasts for a informative programs on the lives of five local Owls by Rob Lowry and Corvids (Jays, Magpies, Crows/Ravens and Nutcrackers) by Jim Woods.Both presenters will also discuss the National Audubon Christmas Bird Counts: Dec.15 or Carson City and January 5th for Minden. The event is Thursday, Dec. 5, at River Fork Ranch, 831 Genoa Lane, 1.5 miles east of downtown Genoa. — End of Prohibition Party at Gather in Carson City. 6 to 10 p.m. End of Prohibition Party (86 years later). $75 per person all-inclusive dinner and one specialty drink. at Gather restaurant. — Pro Jam Night with Lester & Friends at Mangia Tutto. 6:30 p.m. A night out for pro musicians to get together and make some music. Join Brian Lester and Friends every Thursday this summer at Mangia Tutto Pizzeria on the corner of Stewart and Musser St. 6:30 to 9 p.m. Bring your instruments.

ONGOING AND UPCOMING EVENTS

— Annual Angel Tree begins at the Dayton Urgent Care. Daily through Dec. 20. Dayton Urgent Care is hosting its annual Angel Tree for the kids in the Dayton, Nev. community. Last year was a great year for these families and kids that needed a little help. We are always thankful to the community for helping out with all of our drives that we do. I am hoping that this year will be as great as it was last year. The Angel Tree is basically a tree with angels on it. The public is invited to Dayton Urgent Care where they can pick an angel with the child's name. The angel will have the child's clothing size and kind of toys they would like to have. Participants are then encouraged to shop for the child and purchase a gift or gifts they would like. We just ask that if you adopt an Angel from our tree that the Angel gift is returned with a gift or gifts no later the Dec 20. Our tree this year will have around 40 angels on it that will need to be adopted. We are located at 901 Medical Center Drive in Dayton. — Seniors Need Holiday Cheer Too: Home Instead Carson City collects gifts for those without family nearby. Once again Home Instead Senior Care in Carson City asking our wonderful community to help us with gifts for our Senior's here in our community. We have Senior's in long term care facilities that have no family, and have no home to call their own. They need some holiday cheer, a little gift, not much to ask, something warm, slippers, blankets, PJ's, some perfume or colon, just a little gift goes a long way and it sure does brighten their holiday blues.
We have tree's set up at Les Schwab (the north one, 3219 N Carson St), AAA at 2901 South Carson Street and Dayton Smith's also the Les Schwab in Gardnerville, 1151 Highway 395. Or you can come by our Home Instead Senior Care office and ask for a tag, they have their name and a holiday wish or two or three. Buy the gift, bring it back and we will wrap it. — Carson Mall Holiday Craft Underway. Show will be held now until Dec. 24-19 in the interior of the mall. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. — Carson City's Vitalant is hosting a 'Food & Toy Drive' through Dec. 22 to benefit local charities. Carson City's Vitalant, located at 256 E Winnie Ln, is hosting a food drive and gift drive now through Dec. 22 to benefit Northern Nevada Dream Center and the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Nevada. Gifts can be any age range so long as they are unwrapped. Food items include unexpired canned foods or meats, non-perishable boxed foods, peanut butter, etc. For a complete list of most needed items please email gwagner@vitalant.org. — Carson City area food drive happening now to Dec. 21 to benefit Food For Thought. Krisha Caraway with Valley Realty and Management is hosting a food drive to benefit Food For Thought in Carson City. The food drive runs now through Dec. 21 and items can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to her office in Valley Realty and Management located at 302 E William Street.

Established in 2007, Food for Thought was founded on the goal to feed hungry children on the weekend so they can return to school Monday ready to learn. Each Friday, Food for Thought provides a healthy bag of food to hungry children in Carson City, and parts of Douglas County, allowing these children to eat on the weekends and to arrive at school on Monday nourished and ready to learn. Items that are most beneficial to be accepted are:

We are looking for volunteers to help distribute food for our children and families in need. — Carson City family keeps Tiffani and Bailee's annual Sealed Toy Drive alive in memory. Now through Dec. 5. Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer on Dec. 8, 2012. For those who did not know Tiffani, all she ever wanted to do was help people. She carried water and snacks in her car to give to the homeless and people less fortunate than her. It came as no surprise to the people closest to her, when the social worker assigned to her case to Tiffani's hospital room and asked what she needed, Tiffani replied with, "How can I help?"
After much discussion, she found out that Lucile Packard Children's Hospital was in grave need of sealed toys for the children who have no immune system and have to brand new toys. They couldn't even leave their Hospital room. Tiffani got busy and called her sister, Bailee, to put out boxes all over Carson City to collect toys, while Tiffani got busy spreading the word on social media from her hospital bed. Tiffani had one wish: It was to please keep this Toy Drive going after she passed. That's exactly what her sister Bailee and her family have done. The Toy Drive is now underway, beginning Nov. 1, 2019 and comes to an end on Dec. 5, 2019. Please help us, help these kids! For more information or questions, contact Brad Barber at 775-721-5941.
