NDOT: Reconstruction of U.S. 395 in downtown Gardnerville 'substantially completed'
The Nevada Department of Transportation and Sierra Nevada Construction have substantially completed a project to resurface and reconstruct U.S. 395 through downtown Gardnerville.
Construction substantially completed during the week of Aug. 19, and the highway is now reopened to two lanes in each direction.
While major construction is now complete, periodic lane, sidewalk and intersection closures will continue for finishing work such as flashing pedestrian crosswalk installation. Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to remain attentive and travel safely through the work zone.
Preliminary construction began in fall 2023, with major highway reconstruction throughout summer 2024. Using 18,000 tons of asphalt, the project enhanced approximately two miles of U.S. 395 through downtown Gardnerville with the following improvements:
— Resurfaced U.S. 395 between Waterloo Lane and First Street, including more extensive reconstruction from Waterloo Lane to Toler Avenue and from Toler Avenue to approximately Mill Street.
— Electronic flashing pedestrian crossing signs installed/upgraded near Kingslane Court, allowing pedestrians to activate the signs to help stop traffic as they cross the street.
— Upgraded lighting installed as part of existing lighting fixtures.
— Underground conduit line was enhanced for better connectivity to roadway cameras, road/weather information systems, and more. This also provides opportunity for early installation of future electrical and communications including fiber optic cables, as part of a broader plan to make high-speed internet more accessible throughout Nevada.
— Additional storm drains added near Toler Avenue to more effectively direct storm waters.
— Americans with Disability accessibility enhancements to select sidewalk facilities.
The resurfacing provides a safer and smoother highway for the as many as 20,000 drivers who travel the road daily, and enhances accessibility and safety for school students and other pedestrians. The road was last fully repaved in 2003.
“On behalf of Main Street Gardnerville and our community, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Nevada Department of Transportation and Sierra Nevada Construction for including Main Street Gardnerville in this process and, more importantly, for prioritizing and completing this reconstruction project in such a timely manner,” Main Street Gardnerville Program Director Jen Tune explained. “The significance of this project cannot be overstated, as significant improvements to our storm drainage system, connectivity, and pedestrian safety were accomplished. The magnitude of this project is something we have not experienced in our downtown corridor with previous repave projects. It was like watching history in the making.”
A second phase of improvements in future years will include additional sidewalk and accessibility improvements, as well as remaining roadway drainage, signals, and lighting enhancements. Drivers will also see resurfacing of U.S. 395 between Ironwood Drive in Minden and southern Carson City in upcoming years.
