Carson City man jailed for felony hit and run, DUI in Monday crash involving juvenile pedestrian
A 75-year-old Carson City man faces a felony hit and run charge and misdemeanor DUI after allegedly hitting a juvenile pedestrian with his vehicle Monday night and leaving the scene, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Eudoro Avina-Espinoza was arrested at his home in the 4200 block of South Edmonds at 9:53 p.m. Monday. The victim in the incident was flown by Care Flight where he was treated for serious injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.
According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the scene Monday night at Oak Street and Clearview Drive and learned the vehicle that fled the scene was a dark colored Subaru Outback with damage to the windshield. Witnesses provided a partial license plate number and through an investigation, deputies learned where the suspect driver lived.
Deputies arrived at the South Edmonds Street home and made contact with the suspect in front of his residence. The dark green Subaru Outback had substantial damage to the windshield and was located at the residence, the arrest report states.
The man was read his Miranda rights which he stated he understood and agreed to speak. He initially denied he had driven anywhere, that he had been at home and didn’t know what deputies were talking about.
After several minutes he stated he wanted to be honest and said he had driven to the store approximately 30 minutes prior to arrival. He stated he was driving eastbound on Clearview when three individuals crossed in front of him and he hit one, causing damage to his vehicle.
He told deputies the individual he hit had gotten up and so he drove off. A witness positively identified the man as the driver in the hit and run, according to the arrest report.
Deputies could smell alcohol on his person. He had slurred speech and could not maintain his balance, according to the arrest report. The man stated he had a beer at home before he had driven to the store. He consented to field sobriety tests and said he understood instructions but couldn’t do them, the arrest report states. He provided a preliminary breath test of .122 and was taken into custody.
At jail he was read the consent for evidentiary testing where he consented, providing breath samples of .097 and .098. He faces charges of felony hit and run with substantial bodily harm and misdemeanor DUI. Bail: $41,000.
