New family-owned Carson City business serving up handmade ice cream, popsicles and more
While Michoacan A pedir de boca might be new to Carson City, their ice cream and popsicle recipes are much older, stemming all the way from Guadalajara.
Owner Oscar Luna, who co-owns the ice cream, popsicle and general treatery, said that the original recipe began in Mexico after there was an excess of dairy, and quick thinkers moved to them that excess into ice cream, which led to the Michoacan (roughly pronounced me-cho-ah-kahn to those mono-linguists) recipe.
The original makers first began as brick and mortar locations before it spread, taken across the country and into the US through street vendors and new shops nationwide.
Oscar was born in Truckee and spent 25 years in Kings Beach before making his way to Carson in 2013, and he spent a long time determining which Michoacan recipe he wanted to go with for the opening of his new business.
Michoacan opened in late May after numerous construction delays, and are serving over 32 flavors of ice cream and popsicles which are rotated constantly, along with milkshakes, fruit waters, fresh fruit cocktails, and much more, all of which is homemade in the shop by Oscar and his family.
Michoacan is located at 4250 Cochise St. next to Dreamwell Comics, and is open Monday through Saturday from 11:30 to 8 p.m., and until 7 on Sundays.
