413 Western Nevada College students make spring Dean’s List

Western Nevada College’s latest group of students to earn Dean’s List honors has demonstrated how outstanding students can make the necessary adjustments to excel in higher education.

Despite taking most of their classes online during the COVID health pandemic, 413 students made the college’s Dean’s List.

To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

UPDATE 11:06 AM: The National Weather Service has not only issued a Red Flag Warning but has also issued at "Red Flag Warning, Particularly Dangerous Situation," for Wednesday. As NWS forecaster Edan Lindaman explained, the PDS is outside of the normal or typical Red Flag Warning. Due to the cold front moving in overnight into Wednesday, bringing 40 mph-plus winds, the level of measure is of critical concern elevated. Therefore, the Red Flag Warning PDS on Wednesday is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The standard Red Flag Warning is underway today.

UPDATE 10:33AM: The Davis Fire was mapped at 5,596 acres with no containment as of Tuesday morning, according to a briefing from U.S. Forest Service-Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

Fire crews continue to work on perimeter control today, especially in areas of high fire activity. All evacuations remain in place and areas under evacuation orders are closed to the public. There are no public escorts into the evacuated areas at this time due to fire activity.

UPDATE 5:46PM: All Washoe County School District schools, except for Gerlach K-12 School, are closed on Monday, Sept. 9. This includes before and after-school activities and athletic practices.
Also of note, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office reminds people to stay clear of all evacuated areas for the Davis Fire. Air support crews are dropping fire retardants close to residences in evacuated areas.

Also, Carson City is advising the Fuji animal shelter is full and the city has opened Silver Saddle Ranch to house more animals. For non-emergency inquiries call 775-887-2677. Also public works wants to remind people that the evacuation for Sunridge Drive is in Reno, not Carson City.

UPDATE 1:16PM: Truckee Meadows Fire reports that at around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, fire activity increased and evacuation has been reinstated north of Nevada State Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway) to include Arrow Creek, Sky Tavern, Mt. Rose Ski Resort, and Logan Meadows. For more detail evacuation locations visit perimetermap.com.

I-580 between Reno and Carson City as well as Old U.S. Highway 395 to Eastlake Boulevard have reopened. Old U.S. Highway 395 is still closed from East Lake Boulevard to Bowers Mansion Interchange. South and north bound exits to Mt Rose Highway are closed, so is the highway from Wedge Parkway to the summit. For updates on road closures go here.
