Carson City arrests: Woman booked for child abuse; left bruising after hitting son with belt
A 23-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of felony child abuse causing physical harm, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
Digna Marilu Ramos was taken into custody in the 1000 block of South Nevada Street following an investigation.
According to the booking report a deputy was dispatched to the 1000 block of South Nevada Street regarding a welfare check on a 5-year-old child requested by the Division of Child and Family Services in California.
According to DCFS they had received reports of child abuse and that the mother lived at the address. According to DCFS, they had photographs of bruising on the child's right thigh, left buttocks and his head, the report states.
Deputies arrived and made contact with he mother, who allowed them to search the residence for cleanliness, and food and clothing for the child. Deputies saw the refrigerator was nearly empty and contained cake, hot dogs and spices. The mother also showed officers a plastic bag filled with rice and lentils. The woman said she did not have money for food, the report states.
With the assistance of the child's mother, she showed deputies the injury on the child's right thigh and a small bruise on the left side of his back. The injury ran bilaterally upward from the bottom of his hip to the top of his knee, the report states. The injury appeared to be recent. There was bruising, discoloration and minor swelling, and appeared to have been inflicted by being hit with a cord, rope or belt, the report states.
At the deputy's request, Nevada DCFS responded and met with the mother. She said she was unaware how the child received the injuries but said that he fell off his skateboard recently. DCFS told the officer they had determined they were going to take the child into custody based on the allegations, injuries and condition of the home, the report states.
A deputy continued to interview the mother. She was read her Miranda warning and stated she understood her rights and wished to speak. The deputy learned during the interview that the mother originally admitted to hitting the child with a sandal.
The interviewing deputy explained to the mother that the injuries were inconsistent with being hit with a sandal. After the deputy told the woman they didn't believe her story, the mother told the deputy that she hit the child with a belt because he yelled at her and was not listening to her.
The woman allowed the deputy to photograph the belt she used, which was photographed and uploaded as evidence. She was arrested at 5:44 p.m. for suspicion of child abuse causing physical harm. Bail: $40,000.
