Ultimate Sacrifice: Carson City honors the fallen at Memorial Day ceremony
Dozens gathered this Memorial Day at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City to honor those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and liberty.
Lieutenant Commander Robert H. Bledsaw provided the Memorial Day service introduction, speaking about the history of Memorial Day from the Civil War to present, noting the strength, dedication and unity of the U.S. Armed Forces.
During the ceremony, numerous guest speakers described the impact of honor, service and gratitude during their service in the military. These guest speakers included: Mrs. Denise Berumen, Staff Sergeant Elexia Hertel, Nevada Army National Guard Technical Sergeant Katherine Dew, Nevada Air National Guard Lieutenant Commander Dave Treinen.
Military organizations such as: American Legion Post 56 Veteran’s Honor Guard, Battle Born Patriots Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, and Sons of Union Veterans’ of the Civil War were present at the event as well.
Vietnam veteran Steve Waclo gave his thoughts on Memorial Day.
“It’s a day to think seriously about all the wars our country has been through as well as the brave men and women who have given their lives for this country,” he said.
Lieutenant Commander Bledsaw also reflected on the ceremony.
“It was simply amazing. This is a long awaited day that means so much to me," he said. "I’m happy to see the support...Memorial Day isn’t just a day to relax, it’s here to honor the ultimate sacrifice men and women make every single day. All I can do is thank them.”
Many of those who came to pay their respect stayed after the ceremony to observe the resting places for the fallen veterans, thanking them for their commitment and sacrifice.
Earlier Monday, members of the Carson City Marine Corps League held a ceremony at the Stewart Indian School Cemetery along Clear Creek Road to honor the service and sacrifices of American Indians.
