Memorial Day weekend events for Carson City and beyond
This weekend will be a busy one, with air travel being reported at pre-COVID numbers, and many events throughout the Carson City region for Nevadans and tourists to remember those who have fallen in support of our country, as well as taking the time to connect with friends and family.
The annual Memorial Day Flag Placement at Lone Mountain Cemetery will take place Friday at 4 p.m., with flag removal occurring on Monday at 4 p.m. The event is once again hosted by DAV Chapter 7 of Carson City but all are welcomed to attend and volunteer.
Organizers ask that those participating should wear your masks and gloves. The flags will be placed on tables in bundles. There are over 1,700 flags that need to be placed.

— The Carson Comedy Club inside the Carson Nugget will host a patriotic Memorial weekend lineup with three nights of laughs featuring Dennis Gaxiola, a standup comedian and Air Force veteran.
Gaxiola will perform Friday May, 28 Saturday May 29, and Sunday, May 30, 2021, 8 p.m. each night at The Carson Nugget Loft. Go here for more information.
— Carson and Mills Park Railroad opens this Saturday for the 2021 summer season. The Carson and Mills Park Railroad train will be running in Carson City’s Mills Park beginning this Saturday, May 29, 2021.
The first train leaves around 11:30 am. The railroad generally operates every Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day, as well as during special events in the park. Tickets are $2 each. Children 3 and under are free.
We are also excited to announce that the Station will be back open this summer and the public is invited to come in and view the two model railroads. Facemasks are not required while riding the train, but we encourage physical distancing. CCRA would like to extend an invitation to families and other railroad enthusiasts to come down to Mills Park and enjoy a ride on our train any weekend this summer.

— The Carson City Elks Lodge will be hosting a cookout Saturday May 29, 2021 at the lodge, 515 No. Nevada St. There are 40 tickets available.
The Saturday, May 29 event begins with a social hour, 5 p.m. with a dinner at 6 p.m. The cost is $8 per person. the menu includes hot dogs or hamburgers, or cheeseburgers, baked beans, potato salad, and dessert.
Funds will support Elks' charities which include veterans events, medical equipment closet for veterans and/or their families, youth activities such as Hoop shoot, Fishing Derby, scholarships for senior high students, support of the High School Culinary class, Douglas Carson High School Rodeo Club, and Junior Livestock events.

— The Virginia Truckee Railroad is opening its 2021 season Memorial Day weekend starting today, Friday May 28.
Powered by a heritage diesel locomotive, the Virginia Truckee Railroad will be running roundtrips from Virginia City to Gold Hill on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday May 29-31.
Daily tours will begin on June 4. This 35-minute ride runs seven times each day, beginning at 10:30 am. The last train leaves at 4 pm. Fares are $14 for adults and $7 for children ages 5-12. Kids aged four and under ride free. Tickets are available at the depot, or online at virginiatruckee.com.

— There will be a Memorial Day Celebration of Heroes Cruise held in Virginia City on Saturday along C Street beginning at 12 p.m.
Participants will line up beginning at the Fourth Ward School located at the junction of U.S. Routes 342 and 341 at C Street and decorations are encouraged. Walking groups, spectators and passing out candy will not be allowed this year.

— In Minden, there will be a Memorial Day Ceremony held on Monday, May 31 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Eastside Memorial Park located at 1600 Buckeye Road.
