Total 'Blood Moon' lunar eclipse visible in Northern Nevada tonight, though it may be cloudy
The "Super Flower" or "Blood Moon" total lunar eclipse happens tonight, Sunday, May 15, and it will be visible from across the northern Nevada, Sierra and Lake Tahoe region as long as the clouds cooperate.
The partial eclipse starts at 7:59 p.m., with a total eclipse from 8:29 p.m. to 9:53 p.m. Maximum is expected at 9:11 p.m. where the moon is closest to the center of the shadow. The event will be ending at 11:51 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the full Moon will be in the shadow of the Earth, turning it a red hue, hence being called the "Blood Moon." Much of the region will be mostly cloudy, however, but some areas will be able to see it better than others.
This eclipse is also known as the "Flower Moon" due to it happening when there is an abundance of flowers in the Northern Hemisphere.
A total lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and its shadow covers the Moon. Eclipse watchers can see the Moon turn red when the eclipse reaches totality.
