Lyon County Sheriff's Office: Fernley man arrested, accused of sex crimes against children
A Fernley man was arrested Wednesday for alleged sex crimes against children, including assault and child pornography, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
Corey Lane Smith, 29, of Fernley was taken into custody following an investigation that began in early March through the Department of Homeland Security Investigations.
Earlier this month, Homeland Security Investigations contacted the Lyon County Sheriff's Office in reference to an ongoing, months' long investigation into the viewing of child pornography on the internet.
Through the investigation, law enforcement identified Smith of Fernley as the suspect who was using the internet to knowingly and willfully viewing child pornography, according to a news release.
On Wednesday, March 13, Lyon County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Investigators, Special Agents from the Department of Homeland Security and members of the Northern Nevada Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force executed a search warrant at Smith's residence in Fernley, the news release states.
During the search, investigators found evidence of child pornography related internet activity as recent as March 12, 2024, according to the release.
During a subsequent interview, Smith admitted to using the internet to view child pornography. Smith also admitted to sexually assaulting a child in 2021, the release states.
Smith was arrested and booked into Lyon County Jail on the following charges:
— Sexual assault of a child under the age of 14
— Use of the internet to control visual presentation depicting sexual conduct of a person under 16 years of age.
Smith's total bail is $110,000. Anyone with information about this investigation is urged to contact Detective Sgt. Erik Kusmerz at (775) 463-6600, extension 3007.
