— CHS student invites community to senior project game winning blood drive. All day. This Friday March 8, Carson High School senior Nik Hylan is motivating blood donors to put on their game face and show up for an important life saving cause. One donation can save the lives of as many as three people. The Vitalant blood center is located 256 Winnie Lane in Carson City. A variety of raffle prizes from local businesses will be awarded to all donor players who participate. The drive is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. It takes less than one hour to give blood with Vitalant staff on hand to ease the donation process. — Friday Morning Walk: Carson City Freeway Multi-Use Path. 9 a.m. Come and join Muscle Powered for its weekly Friday one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet in the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center's (MAC) parking lot at 1860 Russell Way. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. — Weekly Open Mic Night at the Zen Den in A to Zen Gift Shop held Friday. 6 p.m. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. — Carson City's WNC observatory to feature talk on "Myths and Legends." 6:30 p.m. Northern Nevada Lecturer Mike Thomas presents a talk on the subject of what makes up great stories. The slideshow and lecture will be a fascinating examination of myths and legends. Guests will learn about the validity of many popular beliefs and how to determine fact from fantasy. On Saturday, Thomas returns again for a rescheduled presentation called "Future War." Like the title implies, Thomas will project what war might look like in the future. Both lectures are free and doors to the observatory open at 6 p.m. On Saturday nights when lectures aren’t scheduled, the observatory is open to the public from sundown to 11 p.m. At this time, the Western Nevada Astronomical Society hosts Star Parties, bringing together people with an interest in astronomy. Newcomers are always welcome. The observatory is located at 2699 Van Patten Drive in Carson City.
— Living the Good Life Nightclub, Bistro and Lounge Presents Ev Musselman. 7:30 p.m. The Carson City guitarist and keyboard player is the lead singer and guitarist of the Trippin’ King Snakes band. Living the Good life is located at 1480 N Carson St.
— Sherry Japhet to headline Carson Comedy Club this Friday and Saturday. 8 p.m. Standup comic Sherry Japhet returns to headline the Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget this Friday and Saturday, March 8-9. Sherry has performed for NBC, Nick at Nite's Funniest Mom in America, ComicCon New York, Comedy Time TV and many other venues. — Recruiting underway for Carson City area volunteer foster grandparents. Ongoing. Many children in the Carson City area can benefit from the Seniors in Service Nevada's Foster Grandparent Program. Foster Grandparents are people 55 and over who enjoy spending time with children. “Grandmas” and “Grandpas” volunteer time in schools mentoring and tutoring children. — Jukebox International Film Festival open for 2019 film submissions. Ongoing. Jukebox International Film Festival has opened its doors for submissions for its third year. Known as “the festival that specializes in music-themed films,” JIFF is accepting new entries in the following categories: Narrative Features, Narrative Documentaries, Narrative Shorts, Documentary Shorts, and Music Videos. In 2018, the festival, which is held in August, featured nearly 30-hours of programming from 14 countries over a 2-day schedule. This year, JIFF is expanding to a 3rd day, and they anticipate adding ten additional hours to their schedule. For additional information, visit JIFF’s website at jukeboxiff.org. Jukebox International Film Festival is operated by Wired Wednesday Digital Arts Association, and is presented in conjunction with Jazz and Beyond, who refers to JIFF as “beyond Jazz and Beyond,” as the film festival is held the week right after the end of their month-long music festival.
— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Lay of the Land. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents The Lay of The Land by artist Fred Howland. An artist reception will be held March 29 from 5:00-7:00, Howland will give a brief talk about his photography at 5:30. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m. For Sierra Room access, call 775-283-7421 or check meeting schedules online.
— Photo Finished art exhibit hosted by Capital City Arts Initiative. Through March 31. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Photo Finished," at the Community Development Building (the Brick), 108 E. Proctor Street, Carson City. Eleven artists from Carson High School have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through March 31, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.
— Reno artist work showcased at Carson City's Legislative Exhibition Gallery. Daily. Reno artist Kate O’Hara need only to open her door and look to the mountains to find inspiration for her creations. O’Hara’s exhibit, “Botanica Obscura,” can be seen for the next three weeks at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) inside the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City.
Throughout the 2019 Legislative session, the works of six Nevada artists is being featured. O’Hara is the second of the six artists and her display will remain in place through March 15. My work is highly influenced by nature,” she said. “I spend a lot of time hiking and camping around Reno and Tahoe, taking pictures of wildlife. These photos often serve as inspiration for my work.” Managed by Nevada Arts Council, the Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery space is located on the first floor across from the Caucus Deli in the Legislative Building, 401 South Carson Street, Carson City. Since 1985, LXS has displayed artwork by 140 Nevada’s visual artists during the biennial legislative session.
— Chinese woodcutters exhibit at Nevada State Museum in Carson City. In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000. Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge. A little-known piece of history of the two boomtowns — the role of the Chinese woodcutters who supplied firewood and charcoal to the camps — is the subject of a major new exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. “Fueling the Boom: Chinese Woodcutters in the Great Basin,” opens Friday in the museum’s South Gallery. The Nevada State Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Parking is available in the free public lot on the west side of Curry St. behind the museum.
— Artists sought: Logo contest to celebrate Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery's 40th year. Calling all Graphic Artists: Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary. NAA would like to have a shiny new graphic for its logo to use throughout the year and we need your help. We are offering a $250 award for the winning logo. We encourage you to visit the gallery located on the campus of the Brewery Art Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City to get a feel for it. Some of the original members are still showing their art there. The graphic needs to have the ability to be reduced to 1.5” x 1.5” or 1” x 1.5” with a minimum of 600 ppi. Email the attachment with your finalized logo to naacarsoncity@gmail.comwith your name, phone number and email address printed in the text of the email no later than March 19, 2019.
— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.
— Nevada Artists Association Winter Show. Daily. The winners of the 2019 Nevada Artists Association Winter Show have been announced. The public is invited to visit the gallery at the Brewery Arts Center now through March 22 to see all the submitted pieces. NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street.
— Western Nevada College Continuing Education offers fitness program. R.I.P.P.E.D. is designed to help everybody meet their ultimate fitness goals in a super fun group exercise environment. This 1 hour class combines Resistance, Interval, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance, core and offers a very important Diet program on the Rippedplanet website. R.I.P.P.E.D is for every-body & every fitness level.
Cardio, Weights Fun & Done! Students should plan to eat a snack or small meal about 45 minutes before class, bring a water bottle, towel, and wear exercise clothes and shoes. — WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required - Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
